Miami’s big electronic music festival kicks off Friday, March 29 and runs through Sunday, March 31. That means thousands of festival-goers will flock to Miami and look to ride with Uber to and from the festival.
New location
The 2019 music festival will take place on Virginia Key. Historically, the festival has taken place in downtown Miami at Bayfront Park. The change in location to Virginia Key means changes to pickups and dropoff areas.
Most notably, riders will not be able to request a ride from the festival on Virginia Key. Instead, they’ll be shuttled by the event’s shuttle buses and ferry to one of 3 locations on mainland Miami.
There will be only one roadway to and from the festival—Rickenbacker Causeway. With the influx in traffic, we expect local authorities to strictly enforce traffic laws, including issuing citations to both riders and drivers who unload from vehicles on the causeway. Local authorities will likely prohibit drivers from pulling over on the side of the causeway.
Dropping off
When dropping off riders at the festival, Uber driver-partners will be advised by local authorities to follow event signage and traffic management staff. Message boards are expected to help guide drivers approaching Virginia Key. Failure to comply could result in citations or arrest from authorities.
Key times to log in to the Driver app: Driver-partners may expect an influx of trips to Virginia Key from noon to 9pm Friday through Sunday as riders head to the festival.
We suggest that drivers hoping to continue receiving trip requests after dropping off festival attendees head back to the mainland since riders will not be able to request a ride anywhere on Virginia Key.
Picking up
With the festival moving to Virginia Key, the pickup areas will be different than in previous years. In an effort to help keep roads safe, respect Uber driver-partners time, and support the festival’s shuttle operation, riders will not be able to request a ride with Uber from the music festival. That means drivers will not receive pickup requests from Virginia Key during the festival.
Instead, festival attendees will be taking shuttle buses or a ferry from the music festival. Once they’ve reached the festival’s transit hubs on mainland Miami, they’ll likely request a ride to their end destination. Trip requests are expected to be higher than usual each night around 10pm – 2am from the following locations:
- Shuttle Hub A: Adrienne Arsht Center Metromover Station
- Shuttle Hub B: AmericanAirlines Arena
- Shuttle Hub C: Vizcaya Metromover Station
- Ferry Hub: Bayside marketplace
Please note that drivers may see an increased number of requests from residents on Key Biscayne throughout the festival.
Other important information
To avoid a citation, adhere to local authorities and keep the following in mind:
- Failure to comply with traffic and event signage could result in citations from local authorities, particularly on the shoulder of major roads and highways, such as Rickenbacker Causeway.
- Local authorities and event signage will provide directions to dropoff locations. These locations are subject to change as the festival gets underway.
- Local authorities will likely prohibit drivers from waiting for trips on the island.
Please note that Uber will not pay for any citations that driver-partners may incur.
