6 interesting indoor activities in Miami for summer

July 17, 2017 / Miami

For many months of the year, Miami’s tropical temperature draws visitors from around the world, but the summer months lend strong support to the idea that you can have too much of a good thing. When even the ocean breezes offer little relief from the heat and humidity, it’s time to head inside. Miami has plenty of options for indoor fun.

Summer’s top indoor things to do in Miami

1. Frost Museum of Science

After 5 years of construction, the much-anticipated Frost Museum of Science opened in downtown Miami’s Museum Park in May, and it seems the wait was well worth it. The 250,000-square foot campus includes a planetarium, an aquarium, a laser show, and tons of interactive exhibits covering everything from the Everglades to deep space. Visit before October 20 to enjoy Seeing, an exhibition on the complex sensory experience of sight.

When: Monday – Sunday, 9am – 6pm

Where: 1101 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33132

2. CMX Brickell City Centre

Spending a couple of hours in the air-conditioned comfort of a movie theater on a hot summer day may not be a revolutionary idea, but the CMX theater at Brickell City Centre offers a unique, VIP twist on the idea. The newly opened theater offers 10 screens, 2 bars, and a top-of-the-line audio-visual experience. Enjoy the summer blockbuster of your choice from a giant recliner with a small, attached table that holds your complimentary popcorn and whatever food and drink you decide to order. A server is just a call button away, so you won’t miss a moment of the movie.

When: Monday – Sunday, 11am – 11pm

Where: 701 S. Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33130

3. Salsa Dancing

With live music every night and plenty of frosty cocktails to choose from, Ball & Chain in Little Havana is the perfect place to spend a hot Miami night. The tapas menu earns high marks for its variety of Latin-influenced bites like conch ceviche and chicharrones, but the music and dancing are the main attraction. Depending on the night, you might enjoy a free salsa class and/or a demonstration by professional dancers before the floor opens up for everyone, and from Thursday to Saturday, the fun continues until 3 in the morning.

When: Monday – Sunday, hours vary

Where: Ball & Chain, 1513 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33135

4. Pérez Art Museum

The Pérez Art Museum Miami, or PAMM, is dedicated to the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. While there is more than enough to keep you occupied in the cool exhibition halls, you may want to get an early start so that you can enjoy the incredible grounds and striking views of Biscayne Bay before the day really heats up. Outdoor areas to explore include the Sculpture Garden, which features large-scale work by leading contemporary artists, and the Vertical Vegetation and Hanging Garden, which is home to over 54,000 plants.

When: Thursday, 10am – 9pm; Friday – Monday, 10am – 6pm

Where: 1103 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33132

5. The Great Escape Room

Test your sleuthing skills and deductive reasoning by taking on one of 3 themed escape rooms of varying degrees of difficulty. You and your team will have just 60 minutes to complete the scavenger hunt and puzzle out the clues necessary to unlock the door and secure your freedom. Whether you choose Sherlock Holmes’ Library, Professor Moriarty’s Gameroom, or The President’s Bunker, you’ll be up for a challenge as only 35% of players escape even the “easiest” room.

When: Thursday – Sunday, hours vary

Where: 2315 S. Le Jeune Road #200, Miami, FL 33134

6. SoulCycle South Beach

Mid-summer in South Florida is not ideal for outdoor exercise, but rising temperatures are no excuse for abandoning your fitness routine, and that’s where SoulCycle comes in. To be perfectly honest, you’re still going to break a sweat, but you’re going to do it in a candlelit, air-conditioned studio with easy access to a cool shower after class. SoulCycle’s intense, 45-minute workouts will leave you feeling strong and ready to hit the beach with confidence.

When: Monday – Sunday, class times vary

Where: 2325 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139

Miami is a truly cosmopolitan city, so when the heat becomes unbearable, there are plenty of air-conditioned escapes available. Whether you’re looking for art and culture or a mojito and a dance floor, Miami has you covered this summer.
