Supporting the International Rescue Committee during the COVID-19 crisis and recovery
May 29, 2020 / US
Today, Uber is proud to announce a partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a non-profit organization that responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. Uber is committing $500,000 to the International Rescue Committee’s Uber rides fund, in addition to giving Uber Rewards members the opportunity to join us in our support and select a contribution to the IRC rides fund as their earned reward.
“As an immigrant myself, I believe deeply that everyone deserves the chance to determine their future,” said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. “That’s why I’m proud to partner with the International Rescue Committee to provide rides for those in need across more than 12 countries. Together, we can support some of our most vulnerable community members with essential services during this unprecedented time.”
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the IRC has launched a global response to slow the spread and minimize transmission of COVID-19, while reducing the secondary impacts of the outbreak.
“We know that COVID-19 hits the most vulnerable hardest. From the Middle East to Middle America, the IRC is determined to prevent the spread of the disease and treat those who become ill. That requires new kinds of support,” said David Miliband, President and CEO of the IRC. “Uber’s commitment will help IRC staff reach those most in need and ensure safe access to essential services.”
Over the next four months, Uber’s work with the IRC’s staff will help clients access:
- Emergency and basic hygiene supplies
- Job interviews and employment services
- Medical appointments
- Essential trips to the grocery store, food bank or pharmacies
We know riders are passionate about supporting our global communities during this time of crisis, so starting on June 3, 2020, we’ll integrate a donation feature into the Uber Rewards loyalty program, allowing riders to select a contribution to the IRC’s Uber rides fund as their reward through October 5, 2020. We know that with our riders’ contributions, we can continue to support the IRC’s mission during the COVID-19 crisis well beyond our initial $500,000 donation.
