Last September we set out to offer Anchorage residents a new, safe, and reliable option to move around town. Since then, thousands of Alaskans have chosen to ride using the Uber platform. One of these residents is Samuel. An accountant, explorer and Uber rider.

Like everyone else, when Sam’s not working, he’s exploring Alaska. He enjoys cycling, going to local breweries or even catching a film at Bear Tooth. He adds, “One of the more unique things about myself that most people don’t notice is that I am legally blind. I am unable to (legally) drive a car.”

“Uber because it provides me more options, it brings me more independence. It makes my life easier and solves logistical challenges.”

Because he’s not able to drive, mobility and independent living have always been a challenge. While he is a supporter of the local bus system, it doesn’t meet all his needs. In his words: “If you couldn’t drive, how would you get to most of the trailheads around town independently? How would you take all your groceries home?”

When asked why he Uber’s: “Uber because it provides me more options, it brings me more independence. It makes my life easier and solves logistical challenges. Uber provides me a level of service, and a product that I enjoy, and prefer over other options. Is Uber the solution? No, it’s not the end-all, be-all solution to my mobility needs, but it is an important piece, and it is a trusted option that supplements my bus pass or the occasional taxicab.”

Since launching in Anchorage, Uber has expanded access to transportation options for riders like Sam who are in need of a safe, affordable, and reliable ride. Help us keep this alive!
