We know the amount of time it takes to get a TLC license for your own vehicle can vary, making the process a bit confusing. We’re here to help.

Here are all of the steps you need to complete to license your vehicle:

1. Receive your Plate Letter from the TLC

If you successfully completed LARS, you should have received an email from the TLC with your plate letter. You can also find this letter by logging into TLC Up . If you successfully completed LARS but have not yet received a plate letter, contact the TLC.

2. Take your Plate Letter to the DMV to get new plates and registration

Take your plate letter to to any NYC DMV (must be within the 5 boroughs) to get your TLC plates and registration. The DMV plate letter is only valid for 20 days, so we recommend visiting the DMV as soon as possible once you get your plate letter.

The cost of your plates will be determined by the DMV.

3. Request a vehicle inspection

Once you’ve picked up your plates and registration from the DMV, you’ll need to request a vehicle inspection by completing the Plate Notification Form found in TLC Up. Your inspection date could be a few weeks after your request date, so you’ll want to request an appointment as soon as you have your new plates. After the TLC reviews your application they will send you an inspection appointment date.

4. Complete your inspection

You can then attend your inspection and bring the following:

  • Print out your appointment letter and bring it to the inspection location: BQE TLC – 24–55 BQE West Woodside, NY 11377
  • Your vehicle needs to have a Vision Zero Sticker on the windshield to pass inspection. You can obtain one at an Uber Greenlight Hub or at a TLC authorized printer
  • If your vehicle is a hybrid, you should place two Green NYC stickers on both sides of the rear of the vehicle
  • If you attend the appointment and fail, you can head back to the TLC inspection facility once your vehicle is ready to be inspected again. You can bring the failed inspection report with you. You do not need to have a scheduled appointment

5. Activate your vehicle/s

Once you’ve completed your inspection, you may come back to a Greenlight Hub with the following to get activated and go online with your new car:

  • FH1- Insurance Card (you must be listed as an insured driver)
  • Commercial TLC Registration
  • FHV Diamond Sticker
