How to drive with Uber in the Netherlands

Uber is a great way to be your own boss and make money. Find out what you need to know to start driving in the Randstad area and Eindhoven.

If you are 21 or older, have a valid driving license, and want to operate in the Randstad area or Eindhoven, continue reading to find out how to drive with Uber

New to driving with a Chauffeurskaart

If you don’t have a Kiwa chauffeurskaart and want to become an independent driver, check what you need to do to start using the Uber platform.

  • Time: 12-14 weeks
  • Cost: ca. EUR 2800

Experienced driver

Are you an experienced driver holding a valid chauffeurskaart and taxi permit? Sign up now and start driving within the next 3 days.

  • Time: 1 - 3 days
  • Cost: no additional costs if you have necessary permissions and a vehicle

Drive under Fleet Partner

Do you prefer to operate under Uber Fleet Partner instead of becoming an independent operator? Get more information below.

  • Time: 6-8 weeks
  • Cost: EUR 800-1000 if you don’t have a Chauffeurskaart

Driver requirements details

Minimum requirements

Most people can drive with Uber, even if you don't have a car or commercial permit. Requirements vary by city, but there are a few minimum requirements:

 

  • Meet the minimum age requirement
  • Be legally allowed to drive in your country
  • Watch a short training video

Required documents

For your next step, share the documentation below. If you want to use your own car, you’ll also need to provide registration and insurance.

 

  • Valid documentation to drive in your country
  • Proof of residency in your city, state, or province
  • A driver profile photo
    • Must be a forward-facing, centered photo including the driver’s full face and top of shoulders, with no sunglasses
    • Must be a photo only of the driver with no other subject in the frame, well-lit, and in focus. It cannot be a driver’s license photo or other printed photograph

Driver screening

After signing up, take a few minutes to complete a screening online. It'll review your driving record and criminal history.

New to driving as a chauffeur

If you don’t currently have a valid chauffeurskaart and taxi permit, you can drive with Uber in about 12-14 weeks. Follow the steps below to quickly obtain the necessary documents.

Keep in mind that you can apply for various documents simultaneously. The whole licensing process should take up to 14 weeks and costs around EUR 2800 if you choose to drive your own car.

Week 1

  • Sign up to create a driver account.

  • Register with a driving school to pass the exam and receive your chauffeurskaart.

    • Time needed: 8 weeks
    • Cost: EUR 800-1000
  • Perform VOG check and medical check.

    • Time needed: 4-8 weeks
    • Cost: EUR 80
  • Apply for Kiwa taxi permit.

    • Time needed: up to 12 weeks
    • Cost: EUR 260

Week 2

  • Register with the Chamber of Commerce.
    • Time needed: 1 day
    • Cost: EUR 50

Week 3

  • Choose a vehicle solution and purchase vehicle insurance.
    • Time needed: can take a few weeks
    • Cost: EUR 350-400/month
  • Purchase blue plates for your vehicle and install BCT (computer on board).
    • Time needed: per appointment
    • Cost: EUR 1000-1500

Please note that if you decide to lease your car, the blue plates and BCT will be included in the lease plan and you don't need to purchase them separately

Week 4-9

  • Finalize your driving lessons

Week 10 and 11

Submit these documents through the Uber website or app:

  • Chauffeurskaart
  • Taxi permit
  • Vehicle documents including your insurance information
  • Personal identification documents

Week 12

  • Your account is automatically activated and you can go online.

Experienced licensed driver

If you already have a car, a valid chauffeurskaart, and a taxi permit, you can complete the 4 simple steps below and start driving with Uber within just 3 business days.

1. Sign up to create a driver account.

2. Submit your documents through the Uber website or app:

  • Chauffeurskaart
  • Taxi permit
  • Vehicle documents including your car insurance information
  • Personal identification documents

3. Your account will be automatically activated after we receive all the required information.

4. Go online.

Drive under Fleet Partner

Fleet Partners are business owners who, once registered as drivers with Uber, can make their fleet available to multiple drivers based on an employment contract.

If you don’t want to be self-employed but still would like to drive with Uber, you should complete the following steps:

1. Sign up to create a driver account.

2. Submit these documents through the Uber website or app:

  • Chauffeurskaart
  • Personal identification documents

3. Connect with one of the Fleet Partners to start driving.

Please note that Uber unfortunately can’t connect you with these fleet partners.

4. Your account will be automatically activated after we receive all the required information

5. Go online. Please contact us if you need help finding a Fleet Partner.

Register for VAT

It usually takes 5 to 7 days to complete the VAT registration process.
