Ways to get around Burlington

Walking

Burlington’s downtown area is highly walkable, with many key attractions, shops, and restaurants within close proximity, making it easy to navigate on foot. The city features pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, including well-maintained sidewalks and crosswalks. Its compact layout and scenic streetscapes add to the appeal of walking. However, Burlington’s hilly terrain may require some effort in certain areas, and weather conditions, especially during winter, can occasionally make walking less convenient. Overall, walking is a practical and enjoyable way to explore much of what Burlington has to offer.

Biking

Cycling in Burlington is supported by a bike-friendly environment with a network of bike lanes, shared-use paths, and designated routes that make many destinations accessible by bicycle. The city’s infrastructure supports cycling as a practical way to get around, with efforts to maintain paths year-round, including snow removal during winter. Burlington’s compact size and relatively short distances between key areas make biking a convenient option for transportation. However, the city’s hilly terrain may pose challenges for some riders, especially in certain areas.

Car

Driving is a convenient way to navigate Burlington, with a well-maintained road network and most destinations easily accessible by car. Traffic is generally light compared to larger cities, making driving less stressful. Parking is available in many areas, including downtown, though it may require some planning during peak times. Winter weather can occasionally create challenging driving conditions, so caution is advised during snow or ice. Overall, a car provides flexibility for exploring Burlington and its surrounding areas.

Public Transit

The regional bus system serves as Burlington’s primary public transit option, connecting key areas within the city and surrounding regions. The bus network provides access to many destinations, including downtown Burlington and nearby communities, making it a practical option for getting around. However, the city’s compact size and walkable layout may reduce the need for extensive transit use in some cases. Seasonal weather conditions, such as snow, can occasionally impact transit schedules and accessibility, so planning ahead is recommended during winter months.

Train

Train travel in Burlington is limited in scope and primarily serves as a connection to other cities rather than a local transportation option. The city is served by a train station in nearby Essex Junction, which provides access to regional and long-distance routes. Train schedules are not frequent, and routes are not designed for regular, short-distance travel within Burlington. The infrastructure supports intercity travel rather than local commuting, making trains less practical for getting around Burlington itself. For exploring the city or reaching nearby destinations, other transportation methods may be more convenient.

Ferry

Ferries on Lake Champlain provide a scenic and practical way to travel between Burlington and nearby destinations in New York. The Grand Isle to Plattsburgh route operates 24 hours a day, with crossings taking about 15 minutes. Seasonal ferry services also connect Burlington to other locations, accommodating pedestrians, cars, and bicycles. These ferries provide scenic views and are a practical option for accessing areas across the lake. However, weather conditions and the need for specific schedules may influence their suitability for daily commuting. The ferry docks are centrally located, making them accessible from downtown Burlington.
