Stay safe with our top tips to getting around Cairo after dark
Cairo nightlife is among the best in North Africa with a host of great cafés and restaurants, as well as plenty of evening tours and shows to interest residents and visitors alike. Like any major city, it’s best to exercise some common sense rules to get the best of your evening by staying safe – and Uber’s app has a number of inbuilt safety features to help out. Follow our tips for safely getting around Cairo by night – to make sure you have the most enjoyable of evenings.
Leave the car at home
Parking in the busier areas of town such as Tahrir Square, Downtown, and New Cairo is a real challenge and the roads can be highly congested. Use a combination of transport options – walking, taking the Metro and grabbing a ride with an Uber – depending on where you are and what you are planning to do.
Plan your journey well
Given Cairo’s notoriously busy traffic, plan your journeys away from peak times. The post-work rush hour from 4-7pm is the busiest time of the evening, while other busy times include after the Maghrib and Isha prayers. Likewise, try and avoid busy areas of town if you can. The Ring Road at Carrefour Maadi, and the 6th of October, May 15 and Moneeb bridges are some of the most congested parts of the city.
Choose the right ride for you
Uber’s selection of services means you can choose the ride that suits you best. In a hurry and want to beat the evening rush hour? Use the app to hail an Uber Scooter – but remember of course that only one person can ride with the driver. If you’re looking to make an impression when you arrive at an event, then choose Uber Select – where the cars are newer models and drivers are highly rated. For all other occasions – opt for UberX, our low-cost option.
Know your app
The Uber app is designed to keep people as safe as possible – whether they are riders or driver-partners. Make sure you’re aware of the safety features available to you. The app will always list the driver partner’s name, photo, make of vehicle and registration number – so check these all match up before you get in. Take your time at night – at a busy venue many drivers may be arriving at the same time, so make sure you take the right car.
Get picked up by a star
Uber’s app allows riders and driver-partners to rate each other. Factors riders can take into account when rating include politeness, driving skills and, most importantly, safety. Check out your driver’s star rating and if you’re not happy, ask for another one.
Haggle-free journeys
By using Uber, you never have to barter over the cost of a ride. Prices are transparent to ensure that riders get safe, affordable transport, while driver-partners get to make a sustainable living and keep Egypt moving. Basic minimum fares and prices per km and per minute are listed on our website for all to see, you can also see a fare estimate directly on the app once you enter your destination—so why go through the hassle of haggling when you know what you’ll be paying in advance? As you know the fare, help speed things up if you can by having the right change for your driver-partner if you’re paying in cash.
Sharing is caring
The Uber app allows you to stay safer by letting your family and friends follow your trip. Hit the Share my trip button and enter their details.
