On December 14, 2023, City Council voted to cancel the cap, meaning PTC driver licences will be issued again. However, City Council also signalled their intention to bring back a permanent cap in February or March 2024. At this time, Council’s decision means that you can obtain and renew your PTC driver licence so long as you meet all of the City’s requirements for rideshare drivers.

Instructions for drivers

  • Tell us a little about yourself and your car by creating a driver profile.

  • Your vehicle must meet the requirements to drive or deliver with Uber in your city. There are many options available, check to see which ones your vehicle qualifies for.

  • Take photos of the following documents and upload them to your account:

    • Driver's licence: 21+ years old, Ontario G Driver’s Licence or equivalent (G1 or G2 is not allowed). Make sure to avoid using flash so that your information is clear and readable. If you're uploading an interim licence, please include a government-issued photo ID (e.g. previous driving license, passport etc.) in the same photo to verify your identity
    • Proof of work eligibility: Birth certificate, Citizenship card, Passport, Permanent PR card, Work permit, Social Insurance Number card or letter, Study permit (if it declares the ability to work off-campus unrelated to program of study), Certificate of Indian Status, Canadian Forces Identification Card, Nexus card. Please submit a photo or the original document. Scanned copies are not accepted. Make sure to avoid using flash so that your information is clear and readable.
      • If you are uploading a work permit extension letter, upload the extension letter and your work permit in the same photo
      • If you are waiting for your renewed PR card, upload a photo of your current PR card and PR card extension letter
    • Vehicle registration: Both sides (Vehicle portion and Plate portion) of the registration document are required. The car must also be in good condition with no cosmetic damage, have 4 doors, no commercial branding, and cannot be rebuilt or salvaged. You are not required to own the vehicle. When taking the picture, ensure that it is not blurry and that all four corners are visible.
    • Vehicle insurance: Your name must be visible on the insurance document. If you are the secondary driver, upload a photo of the insurance policy document that has your name on it. When taking the picture, ensure that it is not blurry and that all four corners are visible.
  • There are two safety screenings that you must pass to start driving with Uber in Toronto: a Motor Vehicle Record Check, and a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check.s Check.

Once your Driver's License, Vehicle Inspection, and Profile Photo is approved on your profile, you’ll receive an email from Triton, our trusted background screening partner. The email will contain a link to complete your two screenings. Search your inbox for an email from customerservice@tritoncanada.ca. Gather two pieces of ID to complete your screening online.

The screening will take approximately 3-5 business days to process and your results will be automatically uploaded to your profile. If you receive an error with your screening, contact ubersupport@tritoncanada.ca.

Please note that if you choose to do your background screening through Triton, the cost will be charged back to you through deductions from your future fares. You always have the option of obtaining your own Motor Vehicle Record Check and a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check, and uploading those documents through the Driver App or bringing them to a Greenlight Hub.

In-person: To complete your background screening at a Greenlight Hub, make sure to bring 2 pieces of ID with you.

  • Your vehicle must pass an inspection by a licenced mechanic to receive a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) each year. You must upload a photo of this document within 36 days of passing the inspection. When taking the picture, ensure that it is not blurry and that all four corners are visible.

  • Update: On December 14, 2023, City Council voted to cancel the cap, meaning PTC driver licences will be issued again. However, City Council also signalled their intention to bring back a permanent cap in February or March 2024. At this time, Council’s decision means that you can obtain and renew your PTC driver licence so long as you meet all of the City’s requirements for rideshare drivers.

In order to obtain a PTC licence from the City of Toronto, you must complete a training program by an accredited provider. Please see this page for a list of the most updated training providers. Without a PTC licence, you can still pick up riders in multiple areas of the GTA, including Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Pickering, Ajax, and Oshawa and make deliveries with Uber Eats and UberConnect trips all across the GTA, including the city of Toronto.

If your vehicle is 7 years or newer, we'll submit an application to the City of Toronto for your Private Transportation Company (PTC) licence once you've passed the steps above. It should only take up to 5 days to process. Once you receive your PTC licence to drive in the City of Toronto, you will also be able to accept requests in the City of Mississauga and Town of Oakville.

If you have a vehicle older than 7 years, there are still options available. While you cannot pick up riders in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, and Town of Oakville, you can drive in the GTA. You also may qualify to deliver with UberEATS.
