Our driver stories have always been a source of inspiration for us. This women’s day, we spoke to Shahanaz Akter, who drives UberMOTO. Her story, like those of many others, show how women in Bangladesh are moving forward in all kinds of profession, every day.

Tell us something about yourself.

I am Shahanaz Akter Putul. I live in Mirpur with my mother, an elder sister and two daughters. My elder daughter is in the ninth grade and the younger daughter is studying in the first grade.

How did you come to ride sharing which is a male dominated field?

I have always believed that if someone puts effort and works hard for something, success is sure to follow. So I thought if all the male driver in the ride-sharing industry can work hard and support their family, why can’t I do that just because I am a woman? I was very sure that if others can do it, I can do it as well. So I bought a bike and learnt how to drive it and started driving with Uber.

How do riders react when they see you’re their UberMOTO driver?

Sometimes riders tend to cancel the ride when they realize that they have been matched with a female driver. But most riders are very supportive and congratulate me for taking up an unconventional profession for women. Their encouragement have always given me the strength to keep moving forward.

What kind of obstacles do you face on the road and how do you overcome those?

Sometimes people laugh at me, tease me or try to humiliate me when I am on the road. But I have never let that demotivate me. Sometimes I feel bad when I see people belittling my efforts. But I have always tried to keep my head up and be proud of my honest work. It’s simple, I work hard, earn my wage to support my family and provide for my daughters. My daughters have always worked as my inspiration.

How do other drivers support you?

The drivers in this platform have been very supportive. They have helped me with insights to get more trip requests. Sometimes when riders feel hesitant to accept a ride from a female driver, nearby other drivers have always reassured them that it’s okay.

Do you think Uber can be a suitable profession for other female drivers?

Uber has enabled me to provide for my family and support my daughters’ education. I would urge women who are reading this to take up this profession if they want. Women should not feel ashamed or pay any heed to negative comments from others. It’s always worth appreciating if someone is working hard to earn their wage and support their family.

What kind of future do you want for your daughters?

I have many dreams for them. My eldest daughter is very calm and polite and I would love to see her become a barrister one day. But it’s a lengthy process with many obstacles to overcome. So I am saving up for her future so that she can pursue her dreams of higher education.

Do you think your work can be a source of inspiration for them?

My daughters are still young and unaware of the difficulties of life. But I would like them to realize that women can work at any industry. I have always told them that being honest to your work is more important than what people might say about your work.

Many women are reading this right now. What would you like to say to them?

On this Women’s Day, I would like to talk about how people say that ours is a patriarchal society. But I want all women to change this statement. If we can work along with men in every field, we can change this misconception. Because it’s not just a patriarchal society, it’s a society for both men and women.

নিজের সম্পর্কে আমাদের কিছু বলুন।

আমার নাম শাহনাজ আক্তার পুতুল। আমি আমার মা, বড়ো বোন এবং দুই মেয়ের সাথে মিরপুরে থাকি। আমার বড় মেয়ে নবম শ্রেণীতে এবং ছোট মেয়েটি পড়ে প্রথম শ্রেণীতে।

রাইড শেয়ারিং-এ বেশিরভাগ চালকই পুরুষ। আপনি কিভাবে এই পেশায় যুক্ত হলেন?

আমি সবসময় বিশ্বাস করি যে পরিশ্রম এবং চেষ্টার দ্বারা সব কাজেই সাফল্য পাওয়া সম্ভব। যদি অন্য ড্রাইভার ভাইয়েরা কষ্ট করে রাইড শেয়ার করতে পারেন, রাইড শেয়ারের মাধ্যমে পরিবারের জন্য আয় রোজগার করতে পারেন, তবে আমি মহিলা হয়ে কেন সেটা পারবো না? আমার বিশ্বাস ছিল যে উনারা পারলে, আমিও পারবো। তাই আমি একটি বাইক কিনে বাইক চালানো শিখে নেই এবং Uber-এ চালানো শুরু করি।

আপনি যখন প্রথম চালানো শুরু করলেন, তখন যাত্রীদের প্রতিক্রিয়া কেমন ছিল?

অনেক সময় যাত্রীরা রাইড ক্যানসেল করে দেন যখন তারা বুঝতে পারেন যে আমি একজন নারী ড্রাইভার। তবে বেশিরভাগ যাত্রীই আমাকে সাহস দেন এবং বাহবা দেন যে আমি এমন একটি পেশায় আছি যেখানে সাধারণত মেয়েদের উপস্থিতি কম। এই কথাগুলা সবসময় আমাকে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার সাহস দেয়।

আপনার কাজের সময় পথে কি ধরণের বাধার সম্মুখীন হতে হয়েছে এবং কিভাবে তা অতিক্রম করেন?

মাঝে মাঝে পথে অনেকে আমাকে দেখে হাসে, কথা শুনায়, লজ্জা দেয়ার চেষ্টা করে। কিন্তু আমি কখনো লজ্জা পাইনি। হয়তো কষ্ট পেয়েছি, কিন্তু কখনও লজ্জা পাইনি। আমি সৎ ভাবে আয় করছি, এতে লজ্জার কিছু দেখি না। আমি কাজ করবো, ঘরে বাজার নিবো আর মেয়েদের জন্য খরচ করবো, এটা খুবই সহজ হিসাব। আমার মেয়েরাই আমার জন্য সবচেয়ে বড় অনুপ্রেরণা।

অন্য ড্রাইভাররা কিভাবে আপনাকে সাহায্য করে থাকেন?

ড্রাইভার ভাইয়েরা অনেক সাহায্য করেন। তারা আমাকে অনেক সময় বলেন যে কিভাবে আমি বেশি রাইড পেতে পারি। অনেক সময় রাইডাররা মহিলা ড্রাইভার দেখে বাইকে উঠতে না চাইলে, আশেপাশের ড্রাইভার ভায়েরা তাদের বুঝিয়ে বলেন।

আপনি কি মনে করেন যে অন্যান্য নারী ড্রাইভারদের জন্যও Uber একটি উপযুক্ত পেশা হতে পারে?

Uber-এর মাধ্যমে আমি আমার পরিবারের দেখাশোনা করতে পারছি এবং একই সাথে আমার মেয়েদের পড়াশোনার খরচ বহন করতে পারছি। তাই মেয়েরা যারা এই লেখাটি পড়ছেন, তাদের আমি বলতে চাই যে চাইলে তারাও এই পেশায় যুক্ত হতে পারেন। পাছে লোকে কি বলে- এই ভেবে লজ্জা পাওয়া উচিত নয়। কোনো নারী যদি তার কষ্টার্জিত আয়ের দ্বারা পরিবারের দায়িত্ব বহন করে, তবে তা সবসময়ই প্রশংসার দাবি রাখে।

মেয়েদের জন্য কেমন ভবিষ্যতের স্বপ্ন দেখেন?

মেয়েদেরকে নিয়ে আমার অনেক স্বপ্ন। আমার বড় মেয়েটা অনেক শান্ত শিষ্ট এবং আমার ইচ্ছা যে একদিন আমার মেয়ে ব্যারিস্টার হবে। কিন্তু তার আগে অনেক লম্বা পথ পারি দেয়ার আছে। তাই আমি এখন থেকেই মেয়ের ভবিষ্যতের জন্য সঞ্চয় করছি যেন সে উচ্চতর শিক্ষার মাধ্যমে তার নিজের স্বপ্ন পূরণ করতে পারে।

আপনার কাজের মাধ্যমে আপনার মেয়েরা কেমন অনুপ্রেরণা পায় বলে মনে করেন?

আমার মেয়েরা তো এখনো বেশ ছোট, এখনও এতো গভীরভাবে সব দেখে না। তবে আমি তাদেরকে এই কথাটুকু বুঝাতে চাই যে নারীরা চাইলে সব ক্ষেত্রেই কাজ করতে পারে। আমি তাদের সবসময় বলি যে, কে কি বললো তার চাইতে আমি নিজের কাজ সৎভাবে করলাম কিনা, সেটাই বড় কথা।

অনেক নারীরাই এই লেখাটি পড়ছেন। তাদের উদ্দেশ্যে কি বলবেন?

আজকে এই নারী দিবস উপলক্ষ্যে আমি একটা কথাই বলতে চাই যে মানুষ বলে আমাদের সমাজ একটি পুরুষশাসিত সমাজ। কিন্তু আমি চাই যে আমরা নারীরা সেই কথাটি পরিবর্তন করবো। যদি আমরা পুরুষদের মতো সব ক্ষেত্রেই সমানভাবে কাজ করতে পারি তবে আমরা এই ধারণাটি পরিবর্তন করতে পারবো। কেননা এই সমাজ শুধু পুরুষশাসিত সমাজ নয়, এটি নারী পুরুষ, উভয়ের সমাজ।
