Akib Khan, a final year student from one of the renowned universities in Dhaka, has another identity – he is an Uber driver-partner. In his spare time, he drives with Uber to earn his own pocket money and be financially independent. Let’s get to know how he does it.

Why did you choose ride sharing instead of conventional part time jobs for students in Bangladesh, like tuition?

Initially I registered the account just for fun. But after driving for two days, I realized that there is a great scope for earning in this field. I used be a private tutor previously as well. But that came with its own set of rules and restrictions, specially time-constraint. Compared to that, I liked the flexibility of work hours at ride sharing.

Why did you choose Uber?

Before I started ride sharing, I talked to many drivers and most of them recommended Uber because of the highly updated and user friendly app. So far, I am very happy with my Uber experience, so I have never opted to switch to other platforms.

As a full time student, how do you keep the balance between your studies and Uber?

Having any job along with studies is challenging but It gets easy with the support from the lecturers and friends. The trick here is to allocate time wisely for both studies and work.

Since I started driving with Uber, I specifically request for the morning classes during registration. As all my lecturers know that I drive with Uber, and they have always been highly cooperative in accommodating my request. So I finish my classes in the morning and dedicate the afternoons to Uber. During the exam times, I take a few days break from driving with Uber or drive only a few hours.

How did your family & friends react when you started driving with Uber?

My family and friends have been very supportive of my decision. Thankfully I didn’t have to face any negative reaction from any of my relatives or friends. Plus, I know I am earning an honest wage with Uber, so I don’t let others discourage me at all.

Have you had any memorable trips at Uber?

Yes, many actually. But there’s one trip I specifically remember from one of my early days at Uber.

It was very late at night, around 2 AM. I got a ride request from Airport road. The rider called me and said that his car broke down and he urgently needed to go to Uttara. I knew that it is unsafe to be stranded in the middle of the Airport road so late at night, so I quickly went to his pick-up location. He was very relieved to find a ride this late at night. I dropped him off safely at his destination.

Later he took it to Facebook to thank me with a public post that my family members saw. This whole incident motivated me and made me realize that I can help many people through this work. That’s when I decided to continue driving with Uber.

How do you think Uber has helped your personal growth?

I learned a lot from driving with Uber but the most significant would be my communication skill. I used to be very shy and hesitant when I met someone new. But now I am more confident and more outspoken in my daily life, as I get to interact with different people through my work with Uber.

What would be your message to the students out there who are reading this right now?

I would encourage students to try driving with Uber if they already have a vehicle. Initially, they can drive on weekends when they have some free time as the traffic is usually low on weekends.

Also they should always keep some change with them as it’s not polite to ask for exact change from the riders. Moreover, we should always behave well with the riders. If we show them respect, they will also do the same in return.

সাধারণত স্টুডেন্টরা পড়াশোনা পাশাপাশি টিউশনি করিয়ে থাকে। আপনি রাইড শেয়ারিং-কে কেন বেছে নিলেন?

শুরুতে মজা করেই রেজিস্টার করেছিলাম। কিন্তু দুইদিন চালানোর পরেই বুঝতে পারি যে রাইড শেয়ারিং এর মাধ্যমে আয়ের একটি দারুন সুযোগ রয়েছে। আগে আমিও টিউশনি করতাম। কিন্তু তার জন্য কিছু নির্দিষ্ট নিয়মের গন্ডিতে থাকতে হতো, বিশেষ করে সময়ের একটি দায়বদ্ধতা থাকতো। সেই তুলনায় Uber-এ কাজের সময়টা নিজের ইচ্ছামত বেছে নেওয়ার সুযোগটা আমার ভালো লাগে।

Uber-কে কেন বেছে নিলেন?

রাইড শেয়ারিং শুরু করার আগে আমি অনেক ড্রাইভারদের সাথে কথা বলি এবং তারা আমাকে Uber ব্যবহার করার পরামর্শ দেন। কারণ Uber-এর অ্যাপটি অনেক আধুনিক ও ব্যবহারেও সহজ। এখন পর্যন্ত Uber-এর সাথে আমার অভিজ্ঞতা ভালোই। তাই আমি অন্য কোনো প্ল্যাটফর্ম-এ যাওয়ার কথা ভাবিনি।

একজন ফুল টাইম স্টুডেন্ট হিসেবে পড়াশোনা এবং Uber-এর মধ্যে সময়টা কিভাবে ম্যানেজ করা হয়?

পড়াশোনার পাশাপাশি যেকোনো কাজ করাটাই বেশ চ্যালেঞ্জিং। তবে শিক্ষকদের ও বন্ধুদের সহায়তায় তা অনেকখানি সহজ হয়ে আসে। মূল কৌশলটা হলো পড়াশুনা ও কাজের জন্য নির্দিষ্ট সময় বরাদ্দ করা।

Uber-এ গাড়ি চালানো শুরু করার পর থেকে আমি রেজিস্ট্রেশনের সময় সকালে ক্লাস নেওয়ার জন্য বিশেষভাবে অনুরোধ করি। আমার সব শিক্ষকরাই জানেন যে আমি Uber-এ গাড়ি চালাই, তাই তারা সবসময় আমার অনুরোধ রাখতে সর্বোচ্চ সহযোগিতা করেন। আমি সকালে আমার ক্লাসগুলো শেষ করে বিকালে Uber-এর জন্য গাড়ি নিয়ে বেরিয়ে পরি। পরীক্ষা চলাকালীন সময়ে আমি কয়েক দিনের জন্য বিরতি নেই অথবা অল্প কয়েক ঘন্টার জন্য চালাই।

আপনি Uber-এ গাড়ি চালানো শুরু করার পর থেকে আপনার পরিবার ও বন্ধুদের অভিমত কেমন ছিল?

আত্মীয় এবং বন্ধুরা সবাই আমার সিদ্ধান্তকে শুরু থেকেই সমর্থন করেছে। সৌভাগ্যক্রমে আমি কারো কাছ থেকে কোনো নেতিবাচক প্রতিক্রিয়া পাইনি। তাছাড়া, আমি জানি যে Uber-এর মাধ্যমে আমি সৎভাবে আয় করছি। তাই অন্যদের কথায় আমি নিজেকে নিরুৎসাহিত হতে দেই না।

Uber-এ এখন পর্যন্ত কোনো স্মরণীয় ট্রিপ আছে?

হ্যাঁ, এমন অনেক আছে। তবে আমার Uber যাত্রার শুরুর দিকের একটি ট্রিপ-এর কথা আমার বেশি মনে পড়ছে।

সেদিন বেশ রাত হয়ে গিয়েছিলো, প্রায় ২ টা বাজে তখন। একটি ট্রিপ-এর রিকুয়েস্ট পেলাম এয়ারপোর্ট রোড থেকে। যাত্রী আমাকে কল করে বললেন যে তাঁর গাড়ি নষ্ট হয়ে গিয়েছে এবং তাঁর জরুরিভাবে উত্তরায় যাওয়া লাগবে। এতো রাতে এয়ারপোর্ট রোডে দাঁড়িয়ে অপেক্ষা করাটা বিপদজনক, তাই আমি দ্রুত ম্যাপে দেখানো লোকেশনে গেলাম তাকে পিক-আপ করতে। গাড়ি পেয়ে তিনি যেন হাফ ছেড়ে বাঁচলেন। এরপর তাঁকে আমি নিরাপদে তার গন্তব্যে নামিয়ে দেই।

পরে তিনি ফেইসবুক-এ একটি পাবলিক পোস্ট এর মাধ্যমে আমাকে ধন্যবাদ দেন যা আমার  পরিবারের অনেকে দেখতে পায়। এই পুরো ঘটনাই আমাকে অনেক অনুপ্রেরণা দেয় এবং এর মাধ্যমে আমি উপলব্ধি করি যে আমার এই কাজের দ্বারা আমি অনেক মানুষের সাহায্য করতে পারবো। তখনই আমি Uber-এ গাড়ি চালিয়ে যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেই।

আপনার ব্যক্তিগত জীবনে Uber কিভাবে প্রভাব রাখছে?

Uber-এ গাড়ি চালানোর মধ্যে দিয়ে আমি অনেক কিছু শিখতে পারছি এবং সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ন হলো যে আমার কথা বলার দক্ষতা অনেক বেড়েছে। আমি আগে অপরিচিত কারো সাথে কথা বলার আগে খুব অপ্রস্তুত বোধ করতাম। কিন্তু Uber-এ কাজের মাধ্যমে বিভিন্ন ধরনের মানুষের সাথে আমার যোগাযোগ করা লাগছে। যার ফলে এখন আমি আমার দৈনন্দিন জীবনে অনেক অত্মবিস্বাসী ও স্পষ্টভাষী হতে পেরেছি।

যে স্টুডেন্টরা এই ব্লগটি এখন পড়ছে, তাদের উদ্দেশ্যে কি বলবেন?

আমি স্টুডেন্টদের উৎসাহিত করবো যেন তারাও Uber-এ ড্রাইভ করে, বিশেষত যাদের ইতোমধ্যে গাড়ি বা বাইক আছে। প্রাথমিকভাবে তারা তাদের অবসর সময় মতো শুক্রবার বা শনিবারে চালাতে পারে কেননা এই দিনগুলোতে ট্রাফিক একটু কম থাকে।

এছাড়াও আমি তাদের বলবো সবসময় ভাংতি টাকা সাথে রাখতে। কারণ যাত্রীর কাছ থেকে ভাংতি চাওয়াটা সুন্দর দেখায় না। একইভাবে আমাদের উচিত যাত্রীদের সাথে সবসময় ভালো ব্যবহার করা। আমরা তাদের সাথে সম্মানজনক আচরণ করলে যাত্রীরাও আমাদেরকে সেই সম্মানজনক আচরণটা ফিরিয়ে দিবেন।
