Since launching Uber Eats in Brisbane almost two years ago, we’ve learned a lot about what Aussies are looking for when ordering meals via online food delivery apps.

Sometimes you want a salad from down the street, and other times you want a burrito from your favourite restaurant in neighbouring suburb.

While order distances and sizes vary, restaurants on the Uber Eats app in Australian cities have always charged a single delivery fee.

Starting today, and following similar programs in the US, a 12-week trial in Brisbane is starting to explore whether technology can help unlock more affordable delivery fee options for eaters, while still providing access to further away restaurants at a higher price.

We hope this change will help to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of the Uber Eats marketplace.

Trialling new delivery fee structure

Over the next four weeks, eaters in Brisbane will progressively start to see the new delivery fees from restaurants in app. By Monday 4 February, all eaters across Brisbane will see the new fees.

  • Previous delivery fee:
    • Flat: $5 or $6.95 in some areas
  • New delivery fees for trial (rolling out from today):
    • Closest: $3.95
    • Mid-range: $4.95
    • Farthest away: $6.45

Delivery fees will always be highlighted in the the app upfront, before you select a restaurant, so there are never surprises at checkout. This means there are still no hidden fees and no minimum orders with the Uber Eats experience.

We explained this trial to all restaurant-partners in Brisbane in early December. We’ll be assessing the response to this trial before determining whether a new range of delivery fees will be rolled out out on a permanent basis and to other cities in Australia and New Zealand.
