Our ID scanning tool now accepts Digital Driver’s licences for age verification on alcohol deliveries in Australia. There is no change to how we accept physical IDs, and the customer will be able to provide either option for scanning.
Please follow the same process as previously outlined:
- Sobriety check
- Request ID (Physical or Digital)
- Check identity matches the name on the order
- Scan ID
- Complete delivery
What is a Digital Driver’s Licence?
A digital driver’s licence displays the same information as a physical driver’s licence, along with a barcode. You can use them to verify a person’s identity and age. Digital Driver’s licences are currently available in New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland, with more states to follow. You are able to accept digital ID from any state where they are issued as proof of age.

Scanning the ID in the Uber App
- When you are prompted to, scan the phone screen with your phone. Please note you will need to scan the whole digital licence and not just the QR code.
- If the scan of the digital ID fails, you will be able to enter the information manually on the following screen.
- If you are prompted to enter the information manually, you will still need to check that the ID is valid. Ask the customer to swipe down on the digital driver licence to update the last refreshed time.
How to check that a Digital Driver’s licence is valid:
If you are presented with a digital driver’s licence and the scan on the Uber app fails, here are some tips to check whether it is valid before inputting the information manually:
1. New South Wales
2. Queensland
3. Victoria
- Ask the customer to swipe on the licence to update the last refreshed time. This will show that the digital ID is not a screenshot.
- Ensure that the logo in the background is moving.

4. South Australia
- Shake to animate – If a person presents a digital pass or licence as a form of ID, you can ask them to shake their device.
- With the digital pass or licence showing, when the device is shaken, an overlay showing the current date and time will ‘slide’ over the photograph of the user.
5. Other States
- Currently other states do not issue Digital Driver’s licences.
- This blog will be updated when information about new versions is available.
Some things to keep in mind:
❌ Photos or Screenshots of ID are NOT valid. This change is only for official digital driver’s licences displayed in-app.
❌ If you suspect an ID is fake, we suggest asking for a secondary ID. If you are still unsure, hit the ‘No Valid ID’ button in the app to initiate the return trip.
