Alcohol delivery requests are available to delivery people in ACT and Queanbeyan.
Alcohol delivery is optional
Due to the close geographical proximity between the ACT and NSW, delivery persons may receive requests from ACT licensees to deliver alcohol in parts of NSW and vice versa.
With this in mind, in order to opt in to deliver alcohol via the Uber Driver App, you will need to complete the Responsible Supply of Alcohol Training (RSAT) provided by TAFE NSW, and obtain an RSAT certificate, which is a legal requirement for alcohol deliveries in NSW. Once you have completed the training, you will need to upload your certificate here.
If you have opted in to complete alcohol deliveries and no longer wish to deliver alcohol for any reason, you can opt out of receiving alcohol delivery requests at any time by contacting our support team at help.uber.com.
Please note that the RSA Competency Card is not the same as the RSAT Certificate.
Delivering alcohol
If the order you’re picking up contains alcohol, the Uber Driver App will prompt you to complete a set of tasks required by law. This process is the result of legal and regulatory requirements, not independent instructions or guidance by Uber.
Your responsibility to ensure you comply with the law
Remember, delivery people are required to follow all applicable laws and regulations. This includes road safety laws and laws relating to the delivery of alcohol. Failing to do so could lead to a fine or imprisonment.
The law also requires records of delivery refusals to be kept, so please ensure that you follow the in-app prompts and return the order to the store if the customer is underage or appears intoxicated, or if their identity doesn’t match the name shown in the App.
Additionally, failing to comply with legal or regulatory requirements may be a violation of your Agreement with Uber and could therefore result in you losing access to the Uber Driver App.
Delivery tips and steps:
These steps are designed to help you follow laws relating to the delivery of alcohol. Click on the + sign for more details on each step.
- Step 1 - Sobriety Check
Make sure that the recipient is sober. The law requires that you always check to make sure the person accepting the delivery is NOT intoxicated. It is against the law to provide alcohol to a person who is intoxicated.
According to Access Canberra, some common signs of intoxication include:
- Speech: Slurred speech, rambling or unintelligible conversation, incoherent or muddled speech, loss of train of thought
- Balance: Unsteady on feet, uncontrollable swaying, staggering gait, difficulty walking straight, cannot stand or falling down
- Coordination: Lack of coordination, dropping drinks, difficulty opening or closing doors
- Behaviour: Rude, aggressive, belligerent, confused, inappropriate sexual advances, vomiting
If you are concerned that the recipient may be intoxicated, please hit the ‘INTOXICATED’ button in your App and let the recipient know that you are not legally allowed to deliver the alcohol to them. Once you mark the recipient as intoxicated, the App will navigate you to return the alcohol to the store. Don’t worry, you’ll be paid for the return trip.
- Step 2 - Request ID
Down Small The app will prompt you to request a valid photo ID from the recipient for each alcohol delivery, regardless of their age. It is important to follow these prompts, as it is illegal to deliver alcohol to anyone under 18.
Acceptable evidence of age documents are:
- Driver’s licence issued by an Australian state or territory, or another country
- Australian or foreign passport
- Photo Card issued by the Commonwealth or another State or Territory
- Proof of Age Card issued by the Commonwealth or another State or Territory
- Keypass Identity Card (issued by Australia Post)
At this time we are unable to accept digital forms of ID. If the customer tries to provide a digital ID, politely ask them to provide a different form of ID.
- Step 3 - Check identity
Down Small In NSW, the law requires you to verify that the identity of the person accepting the order matches the adult person specified in the written instructions given to you. Check that the person to whom you’re handing the alcohol matches the photo of the person on the ID and that the customer name in your Uber Driver App matches the name on the ID that has been provided.
If there is a mismatch, please select the ‘Customer doesn’t have valid ID’ button to initiate the return trip. Let the recipient know that you cannot deliver the alcohol to them if they are not the account holder.
- Step 4 - Take a photo of the ID
Down Small Using your Driver App, follow the prompts to take a photo of the customer’s ID to confirm the customer is over 18.
Place the card in the frame and make sure all text is clear and visible
Avoid glares or shadows in the photo
After submitting the photo, please allow 30-45 seconds for ID verification to complete.
*The app will prompt you to complete this step for all customers, no matter what age they appear. It is important to follow these prompts, as it is illegal to deliver alcohol to anyone under 18.
If the in-app verification fails, the App will prompt you to input the delivery recipient’s name, date of birth and the expiration date of their ID into the App. Be sure to input the exact date of birth and expiration date on the ID.
If the recipient does not agree to have their ID scanned for any reason, select “Cannot show valid ID” in trip issues and you will be prompted by the App to return the items to the store. - Step 5 - Complete the trip
Down Small If you have checked that the recipient is sober, verified their identity and followed the in-app prompts to take a photo of their ID, or (if in app verification has failed) manually entered their name, date of birth and the expiration date of their ID, you may hand the order to the recipient and complete the trip.
If you have any concerns about the person’s age or identity, the validity of the ID or their sobriety, you should not complete the delivery. The Uber Driver App will navigate you back to the store to return the alcohol. Your payment will include the return trip back to the store.
