Driving with WAV
WAV (wheelchair-accessible vehicle) is a ride option that helps ensure that everyone in a community has access to a ride when they need one. You can help your community, and make money, when you drive with WAV.
Why drive with WAV?
There are many great reasons to drive with WAV:
Get a lower service fee for all your trips
Make additional earnings for every completed WAV trip
Receive both UberX and WAV requests
Help your community by providing more transportation options for people with accessibility needs
How WAV and UberX differ
WAV
- Requires a vehicle capable of loading and securing passengers using motorized wheelchairs
- Drivers are required to take an approved WAV course
- Drivers can receive UberX and WAV trip requests (no UberPool or UberXL)
- Since WAV riders may require assistance and need to be secured, trips can be longer
UberX
- Uses 4-door vehicles
- Drivers do not require any additional course
- Drivers can receive UberX and UberPool trip requests
- UberX riders typically require minimal or no driver assistance
Helping riders in wheelchairs or scooters
Knowing how to store wheelchairs and scooters helps people with limited mobility feel welcome and independent in your car.
Ask before handling wheelchairs
Start by asking the rider how you can help. Follow their directions and be careful handling their wheelchair or scooter.
¹Applies only to completed trips where riders select a WAV trip through the Uber app.
²To qualify, a driver must complete 40 trips starting within the City of Toronto within one week (Mon 4am – Mon 3:59am).
³The lease can be ended at any time with one month’s notice. There is a $300 termination fee, plus additional fees may apply for excessive wear and tear, to leases terminated before lease end date.
