Every trip is insured

Auto insurance that helps protect you

Uber maintains commercial auto insurance to help protect you in case of a covered accident while ridesharing on the Uber app. Here’s how it works.

As of September 1, 2020, the coverage described below is provided by Economical Insurance in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. Coverage for incidents that occur prior to that date continues to be provided by Intact insurance.

Ontario

The commercial auto insurance that Uber maintains on your behalf when you’re on a rideshare trip in Ontario is provided by Economical Insurance and includes the following protection in case a covered accident occurs between accepting a trip and reaching the rider’s destination:

$2 million of liability coverage

Covers your liability to third parties from the moment you accept an Uber trip until its conclusion. This policy takes precedence over your personal auto coverage.

$2 million of uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

Protects vehicle occupants who are injured in an accident by a hit-and-run driver, an uninsured driver, or a driver without sufficient insurance.

Contingent collision and comprehensive coverage

Covers loss or physical damage to your vehicle up to the actual cash value of the vehicle with a $2,500 deductible. This coverage only applies if the vehicle is also insured for collision and comprehensive coverage on your personal auto policy.

Statutory Ontario Accident Benefits

Coverage between trips

Uber also maintains commercial auto insurance on your behalf during the time that you are available through the Uber app but have not yet accepted a trip. When applicable, the insurance provides $1 million of third party liability coverage and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage along with all of the other coverages listed above.

Uber maintains auto insurance on behalf of Quebec partners. That insurance is provided by Economical Insurance and includes the following protections in case of a covered accident:

$1 million civil liability coverage

Covers your civil liability to third parties from the moment you log on the Uber app until the moment you log off.

Contingent Coverages

Insures loss or physical damage to your vehicle if you have the coverage on your personal auto policy. The coverage and deductible payable by you are those included in your personal auto policy.

Saskatchewan

As a rideshare driver in Saskatchewan, you do not need to adjust your personal auto insurance policy. You will continue to pay for your plates and receive the SGI basic insurance coverage as you do today. Uber will pay an additional premium to SGI so that your basic insurance will not exclude ridesharing activity - i.e. the time period from when you have accepted a ride via the Uber app until the trip is completed or the ride is cancelled.

If you’re engaged in ridesharing activity and are responsible for a collision, basic plate insurance will still apply. Additional Uber purchased liability insurance will apply if damages exceed $200,000 (the liability insurance included with basic plate insurance).

The Uber purchased policy provides $2 million in liability limits. The policy also includes $2 million of uninsured motorist coverage. A link to the policy is here.

If you have purchased an Auto Pak policy to lower your deductible, or for replacement cost coverage if you’re involved in a collision, that coverage will not apply if you’re involved in a collision while engaged in ridesharing activity. If you’re driving your vehicle for personal use (i.e. not engaged in ridesharing activity), your package policy will apply in the event of a collision.

British Columbia

As a rideshare driver in British Columbia, you do not need to adjust your personal auto insurance policy. You will continue to pay for your plates and receive the same personal auto insurance coverage as you do today.

Your personal auto insurance will apply to a covered accident while using your vehicle for personal use and while driving on the Uber app but prior to accepting a ride request.

Once you’ve accepted a ride request on the Uber app and you are en-route to pick up the rider(s) or traveling with the rider(s), Uber maintains commercial auto insurance on your behalf. This Uber purchased policy includes $2 million in third-party liability limits, as well as contingent physical damage coverage (subject to a $2,500 deductible). A link to the certificate of insurance for the policy is here.

Personal Use

You remain responsible for maintaining your personal auto insurance to provide coverage when you are using your vehicle for personal use.

Commercial coverage for Uber Black

To provide Uber Black rides, you must be a professional limousine driver with a commercial license and commercial insurance.

Uber does not maintain insurance to cover Uber Black and Uber SUV as the drivers are required to maintain their own commercial insurance.

Commercial coverage for Uber Taxi

All Uber Taxi rides are provided by commercially licensed and insured partners and drivers. Those transportation providers are covered by commercial insurance policies in accordance with provincial requirements.
