Carriers are famous for going their own way, especially when it comes to how they run their businesses. There is one thing, however, all owner-operators can probably agree on: you won’t make it far in trucking if the rates aren’t right.

Ferdinand Heres brings a different perspective to booking loads. Originally from Germany, he worked in managing trucks as part of his previous career. To better understand the business, he earned his truck driver’s license. After moving to the US in 2005, Ferdinand switched to being a company driver and three years ago made the jump to an independent owner-operator.

Downtime can also be a major problem for carriers. Scouring job boards while sitting idle often pressures a carrier to find a load fast, and rushing can mean overlooking better opportunities. This stressful situation can be minimized or avoided entirely, Ferdinand says, by planning ahead.

Whenever possible, Ferdinand schedules his next load before dropping off his current one. “Anticipate the time of arrival, look at loads leaving in the surrounding area, and have the next load already booked before the offload,” Ferdinand advises. “That’s something I’ve always done.

But load price, by itself, isn’t the only characteristic Ferdinand considers. “I prefer loads that are a little farther between pickup and delivery,” he says, “that leaves me more room for when to take a break and how I plan my rest.”
