Families today are busier than ever. With 3 out of 4 US households relying on working parents and schedules that rarely line up, it’s no surprise that 57% of US teens’ daily travel currently happens without a parent or guardian. Helping teens get where they need to go isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s essential.
That’s why we created Uber teen accounts — to give teens a tailored safety experience for their solo trips, with features that help families stay connected every step of the way. In the last year alone, teens spent more than 1.1 million hours on the Uber teens platform traveling to and from sports practices, rehearsals, school events, and more — all under parental supervision. And the message from families is clear: Uber teen accounts have become an essential part of the daily life of families in over 200 cities and towns across the US.
Teens are on the move, and Uber is helping families keep up
Across the US, families are leaning on Uber teen accounts to stay connected and on time. The numbers tell a deeper story of modern family life:
- Nearly half of teen rides happen during school commute hours, helping families stay on schedule when every minute matters.
- More than 75% of teen trips are under 20 minutes, making Uber a convenient option for quick errands, pickups, and dropoffs.
- The average trip is just 6 miles — short rides that power big moments, from sports practice to study sessions.
- Weekend rides stretch more than a mile longer than weekday ones, helping teens explore farther-reaching parts of their community.
- More than 60% of teen trips happen outside the most densely populated areas, helping families in suburbs and rural communities stay mobile and connected.
By giving teens a trusted way to move independently, we’re helping parents worry less and do more. That’s why we collaborated with National PTA to support families with tools and education that empower them to make confident transportation choices.
“Through our collaboration with Uber, we’re helping families feel more confident about teen transportation. By giving caregivers timely information to decide if and how their teens use features like Uber teen accounts, we’re supporting independence in a way that keeps everyone connected.” — National PTA
Built with safety in mind
Safety features like live trip tracking, PIN verification, and RideCheck are built directly into every teen trip—and they can’t be turned off. Parents can follow trips in real time, contact the driver at any point, and access additional safety support if needed. It’s important to note that users must be 18+ or ride with an adult when using Uber, unless they are using a teen account.
Every driver on Uber must complete a thorough background check before taking their first trip. For teen trips, we go even further. These drivers are experienced and highly rated, for an extra layer of confidence for families choosing teen rides.
From the start, we worked with trusted organizations like Safe Kids Worldwide to ensure Uber teen accounts reflect what families want most: smart safeguards and simple tools that support independence.
“At Safe Kids Worldwide, we work to encourage teens to buckle up every time, every ride. We were honored to assist in developing tips for parents and teens to ensure safety is a key component of Uber for teens.” — Safe Kids Worldwide
Looking ahead
Families nationwide are turning to Uber teen accounts to help manage busy schedules and support growing independence. We’re building on that momentum by working with parents, safety experts, and community leaders to enhance the experience even further.
Because when families have the tools to thrive, entire communities move forward.
