As the music-loving crowds descend on the city for Lollapalooza, we take a look at some of the local musicians in Chicago that keep the scene alive even after Grant Park empties out for the summer. They help move Chicago as driver-partners, just as the music industry moves them every day.
The musicians of Chicago
Zakiya Powell
Zakiya is a former Jazz trombonist who started her own music management company and has been deeply involved in Chicago’s music scene for more than a decade. Her lifelong passion for music drives her, and as an Uber partner helps keep her connected with the city she loves.
Dusty Borlack
Dusty got his start as a drummer playing pots and pans in a garage with neighbors, now 20 years later he’s playing full time with 6 Chicago bands and acts including Zombie Mañana, Chicago Funk Mafia, Jovan Landry, and Puickt.
What was your first concert?
Lover boy and Blue Oyster Cult when I was 4 years old. I remember being held up by my mom. I first really remember seeing Hootie and the Blowfish when I was 6. The first one I went to by myself was Ozzfest.
Who is your biggest musical influence?
Brandon Boyd, the lead singer for Incubus. They really have a positive influence with their lyrics. Each album is different and they’re open to experiment and sounds, plus they are very environmentally conscious.
What’s your favorite neighborhood in Chicago?
Morris Ave in Rogers Park. You can find a street performer, a lot of artistic people, a lot of graffiti, and it goes right to the beach.
What’s the best way to experience live music in Chicago?
Festivals. You’re outside with a big group of people. It’s so diverse, there’s whatever you like. I moved to Chicago for the music. It’s so central and so many people from around the world are coming into and coming out of the music industry here.
Who are you most looking forward to catching at Lolla?
alt-J, Muse, and Chance.
Ron Steta
When Ron was young his parents owned a mom and pop music store on Chicago’s North Side, so music was always his destiny. He started playing when he was only 6, started teaching when he was 12 and was a professional by age 13. His music has taken him around the world to 130 countries and all 50 states.
What fuels your passion for music?
I just love it. It takes my spirit to another place. I teach and do festivals in the summer and I drive with Uber in between.
What’s the best way to experience live music in Chicago?
Come over to my house! Depends on what style you like, but I always recommend checking out the blues scene like Kingston Mines or Legends. Blues is the best thing to experience as a first timer or visitor.
What’s your favorite place to play in Chicago?
I’ve played Soldier Field. I’ve played for Michael Jordan’s last championship game in 1998 in Grant Park in front of 600,000 people. That’s the biggest show I’ve done.
What’s the best part about Chicago’s music scene?
It’s got depth. Any kind of music you want you can find it here. From orchestras, to blues bands, to street bands, to garage bands. There’s just a lot of talent out there. Through Uber I picked up a couple and started talking music and about their upcoming wedding—then three weeks ago I played their wedding. I love meeting people from all over the world and driving expands my music experience.
Who are you most looking forward to catching at Lolla?
The Killers.
The Chicago music scene is alive and well, and it has something to offer everyone, whether you’re a musician or simply enjoy listening.
