Introducing HoosierShare, Indiana University’s innovative program with Uber

Get ready to ride, folks.

Indiana University Bloomington (IU) has teamed up with Uber for HoosierShare by Uber, a new shared rides program created just for IU students, faculty, and staff. 

With HoosierShare, eligible riders can enjoy 24/7 stress-free shared Uber rides around Bloomington and campus while saving up to 20% off standard UberX fares.

What is HoosierShare? 

HoosierShare is a rideshare program just for campus, created specifically for Indiana University Bloomington, and powered by Uber’s Closed Loop Share feature. 

It connects verified IU Bloomington riders heading in the same direction, allowing riders to:

  • Share rides with up to two other IU locals
  • Lower trip costs compared to standard UberX
  • Travel within a trusted IU-only rider network

Whether you’re heading to a late-night study session at Wells Library or back home after a night out, HoosierShare offers a simple, affordable way to get around Bloomington.

How to sign up for HoosierShare

Keen to ride with your fellow cream-and-crimson mates? Follow these steps to sign up: 

  1. Make sure you have the Uber app. To ride with HoosierShare, you’ll need an Uber account and the Uber app. 
    • If you don’t have an Uber account, download the Uber app from the App Store or Google Play. Then, set up your Uber account by providing the required details and following the prompts in the app. 
    • If you already have an Uber account, you’re good to go for the next step.
  2. Sign up with your IU credentials. Use your IU credentials to access and complete this secure enrolment form.
  3. Wait for verification. Once your affiliation is confirmed, HoosierShare will show up as a ride option in your Uber app.

All HoosierShare trips must start and end within the designated IU Ride service zone.

How to ride with HoosierShare

To request a HoosierShare ride, follow these steps:

  • Open the app and enter your destination address in the “Where to?” field. 
  • Check your pickup and dropoff locations to make sure they’re correct.
  • You’ll see several ride options, including UberX, Share, and XL. To ride with HoosierShare, select the HoosierShare ride option. 

Note: HoosierShare only allows one person per booking. If you're travelling with a mate, book an UberX to your destination instead.

  • Select Choose to confirm your ride option 
  • Select Confirm pickup to confirm your pickup location.

Remember: All HoosierShare trips must start and finish within the designated IU Ride service zone.

Waiting for your driver

​​While your driver is on the way, follow these best practices:

  • Use the Uber app to track when your vehicle arrives. 
  • When your driver is a few minutes away, make your way to your pickup spot. 
  • Once your vehicle has arrived, check your ride before getting in: make sure the licence plate number shown in your app matches the actual vehicle. Drivers will often also ask for your name before starting the trip.

  • Enjoy your trip! Once your trip ends, you won’t need to worry about payment as your payment method is already linked to your Uber account. 
  • Let us know how your trip went by rating your trip. You can also give your driver a compliment or leave a tip in the app. Tipping isn’t required.

  • Open the Uber app and tap on Activity at the bottom of the screen.
  • Select the trip where you had an issue.

Frequently asked questions

Who can use HoosierShare?

HoosierShare is available exclusively to Indiana University Bloomington students, faculty, and staff who sign up using their IU credentials.

How do I sign up?

Sign up through the HoosierShare sign-up form using your IU email and login details. Once you’re approved, HoosierShare will show up as a ride option in the Uber app.

Where can I travel?

HoosierShare rides are available within the IU Ride service zone around Bloomington. Trips must start and finish within the designated service area.

Can I ride with mates?

HoosierShare only allows one person per booking. If you're travelling with a mate, book an UberX instead.

How many people will be on my trip?

HoosierShare will match you with up to two other individual riders, for a maximum of three passengers from different groups in the vehicle at any one time. HoosierShare is designed to add no more than 8 minutes on average to your trip.

How much does HoosierShare cost?

Shared rides can be up to 20% cheaper than standard UberX fares because riders share trips with other IU community members heading in the same direction.

How is HoosierShare different from UberX?

HoosierShare lets riders share trips with other IU community members, cutting costs while enjoying a stress-free ride.

How do I contact support if I'm involved in an incident?
