Uploading your documents

To drive using the Driver app in South Africa, you are required to upload certain documents to get your account set up. Refer to the information below when uploading each document.

Required documents

Driver documents

  • SA Professional Driving license
  • Proof of identification. You must be at least 21 years old.
  • Screening check (available at ANY PostNet)
  • Driving evaluation (ONLY CPT, JHB and DBN)
  • Profile photo

Vehicle documents

  • Operating Card (Double Disk)
  • Uber vehicle inspection certificate (Only Dekra certificates will be accepted in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban)
  • Comprehensive vehicle insurance cover
  • Operating License, or Grant/Decision Letter, or an official Application Receipt (from the Department of Transport in Johannesburg, Pretoria or Cape Town)

Make sure all required details are clearly visible

Ensure your document contains all required details before uploading. The entire document should be clearly visible.

Upload your driver's licence first

This will speed up the approval process when we need to cross-check your licence with other documents.

Original documents only

We do not accept photocopied documents, so please make sure you only upload original documents.

  • Operating Card (Double Disk)

    How to obtain this document:

    • Visit your nearest roadworthy centre or DEKRA
    • They will give you an extra form that you submit at the licensing department
    • This document is obtainable at any Licensing Department and takes between 1-3 days to receive
    • This document indicates that it is a commercial vehicle used to transport people
    • If you do your roadworthy and vehicle inspection at DEKRA, an overall discount will be imposed.

    PRO TIP: The Operator Card will always expire at the end of the month – make sure to key in the correct expiration date.

  • Vehicle certificate of registration

    How to obtain this document

    • This document is obtained when you purchase and register the vehicle in your name.
    • If this is a financed vehicle, the bank may hold the original document (Ask for a copy from the bank)

    Tips to load this document

    • The year of first registration as well as the license plate of the vehicle should be visible
    • The vehicle needs to be registered in your applicable province. Any documents provided by other provinces can not be accepted
  • Vehicle inspection certificate

    How to obtain this document

    • Vehicle inspections are performed by your nearest DEKRA test centre (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban)
    • The Inspection report must be uploaded within 1 month of completing your inspection.
    • If your vehicle is newer than 6 months, a vehicle inspection report is not needed. You can upload your vehicle certificate of registration instead.

    Gauteng Application process

    VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE: You cannot go to any department office (TOLAB) to start your application process before going to the Greenlight Hub and indicating that you need a confirmation letter

    IF YOU INTEND ON APPLYING FOR THE OPERATING LICENSE FOR YOURSELF, PLEASE FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS

    New Operating Licence applications must follow these steps: How to submit:

    STEP 1

    You will receive a RAS (registration) Form at the department door (4-pager) - Only Fill in pages 1, 3, 4.

    Upon submitting support document pack, the Registrar captures your details on the RAS system

    You must then request a hardcopy of the 1B application form from the Registrar - form to be completed prior to starting step 2.

    Step 2

    Once registered and the 1 B form is filled out - Start the application process

    Produce completed hard copy of 1B application form (One application per vehicle being applied for, Only the following sections need to be completed either fully or partially: Section A, B, C (for Proxy), F, G (partially), H (partially), J, No vehicle particulars need to be noted as this is picked up from Step 1)

    Once done, your waits application will be captured and processed, then a fee of R300 is paid via card and a receipt is provided to you.

    • Identity Documents; Proof of full names and ID or Business Number - Certified

    • Director’s ID Certified

    • Traffic register number certificate (TRNC) issued by NaTIS in terms of the National Road Traffic Act: Provided that the TRN for a private individual must be accompanied by a valid source document in the form of an unexpired Refugee ID or Permit (DHA 1692, DHA 1693 or BI‐1707), foreign passport and visitor's, work permit or study permit. - Certified

    • Proof of address - Certified

    • Form 1B (you will receive this form at the department)

    • Tax Clearance Certificate or SARS Pin (Should be in the name of the applicant)

    • Company Registration Certificate - If necessary

    • Foreigners need to submit passport and workers permit

    • Proof of Address

    • If you are a company and are sending a representative to process your applications. A company proxy letter and Certified ID copy of the proxy should be included.

    • Confirmation Letter from Uber - Provided by Uber at the Greenlight Hub

    Western Cape Application process

    IF YOU INTEND ON APPLYING FOR THE OPERATING LICENSE FOR YOURSELF, PLEASE FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS;

    New Operating Licence applications must follow these steps: How to submit:

    Scan all the documents relevant to your application (both the form and supporting documents) and email them to DTPW.preapplications@westerncape.gov.za, complete and submit the relevant forms. Tel: 0214830270; AND Shantel.Radien@westerncape.gov.za, Tel: 021 483 0241.

    Once your application has been received by the staff at the customer relationship office (CRO), it will be verified at the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works to ensure that the application is complete.

    You’ll be sent an email to confirm receipt of your application. This letter will also include the PTSC banking details and a unique reference number, which should be used when you make your application payment either through electronic funds transfer (EFT) or through normal banking procedures.

    Remember that each application has to be a separate EFT/payment and must include the correct reference number for the application.
