COP 30 will take place in Belém, Pará, from November 10 to November 21. The city, located in the north of Brazil, is expected to become the center of the world’s attention on sustainability. In addition to the official event, Belém will have a special cultural agenda and extended hours for local establishments.

The increase in the movement of people around the city requires heightened attention. Movement at the airport is also expected to be intense, and it is important to be aware of “fishers” – people who approach riders offering trips. Trips taken outside the platform lack Uber’s technology features and safety processes, as well as transparent pricing, which can result in losses for the rider.

Below, Uber shares tips and some of the safety features available in the app, which can assist riders and partner drivers throughout their trips.

Before boarding, check the vehicle: Verify that the license plate, car model, and the partner driver’s name and photo match the information in the app. For added safety, activate “Verify your Ride”. When active, the rider must verbally provide a PIN code to the driver before the trip starts to confirm it’s the right ride. Drivers can also activate the feature, which works the same way.

Share your route with someone you trust: With “Manage trusted contacts”, users can share trip status with friends or family, who follow the route from boarding to drop-off. It is also possible to activate this to work automatically.

Use the seat belt: Mandatory for all occupants of the vehicle. To reinforce this habit, Uber has a seat belt alert, which reminds riders and drivers to buckle up at the beginning of the trip.

Safety Preferences: This feature allows to program the automatic use of features – such as trip sharing and PIN code – at specific times or locations, such as at night.

Audio & video recording: Both riders and drivers can activate a feature to record the audio during the trip. The file is encrypted and can only be accessed by Uber if the rider or driver submits it as part of a safety report. Drivers can also record the video using their own dashcam or with the front camera of their smartphone.

Safety check-ins: Detects route deviations or long stops, directing the user to the app’s safety tools available.

Button to call the police: Available throughout the country, the feature allows a direct call to the police within the app and displays the current location and vehicle data on the screen. In Belém, Pará, this function already operates in an integrated manner, automatically sending real-time information and location to emergency service attendants.

Insurance: All trips made through the app include insurance that covers from the moment the driver accepts the trip until the rider is dropped off. The benefit includes medical and hospital expenses in the event of an accident, in addition to coverage for more serious situations, such as permanent disability.

Safety is a priority for Uber, which continually invests in technology and innovation to enhance the experience of everyone who uses the platform. The company maintains 24-hour support channels and a dedicated incident analysis team, available to act in real time – including during the COP 30.
