Christchurch
Does your vehicle qualify to drive with Uber? Most four-door cars do, but requirements vary by vehicle option.
Minimum requirements
- In excellent working condition
- No older than the maximum age for the Uber vehicle option chosen
- A qualified vehicle according to specific product requirements
- Registered and insured in New Zealand
- Free from cosmetic damage and commercial branding
Other minimum rules apply to specific vehicle options.
Insurance
All vehicles driving with Uber must be covered by at least third party property damage car insurance. To drive with UberX, you also need to be listed on the car’s insurance policy, even if you are not its owner or the main policyholder.

Additional requirements
- Are in excellent working condition, with no cosmetic damage
- Are registered and insured in New Zealand
- Are 12 years old or less
- Have 4 doors
- Seat 4-7 passengers plus the driver
- Hold valid Certificate of Fitness
- Are not taxis, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicles
The following vehicles cannot use the UberX app
- Large passenger vans or heavy duty truck.
- Assist
This option is designed for riders living with disability, older adults, or those who need an extra hand when getting from place to place. Assist vehicles can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, and collapsible scooters. You’ll also need to complete a free training course provided by Be Accessible.

- UberEats
UberEats is a food delivery app that allows people to order food from their favourite local restaurants at the tap of a button. You can deliver with UberEats using your car, scooter or even your bicycle.
There are 4 ways to deliver with UberEats:
With a bike:
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You can ride a bike around Christchurch
- You have passed a background check
With a scooter/motorcycle:
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You have a valid NZ licence (full Type 6)
- Your scooter or motorcycle is a 1990 model or newer
- Your scooter or motorcycle is registered in New Zealand
- You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
- You have passed a background check
With a moped (50cc or less):
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You have an unrestricted (full Type 1) NZ licence
- Your moped is a 1990 model or newer
- Your moped is registered in New Zealand
- You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
- You have passed a background check
With a car:
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You hold an unrestricted (full Type 1) NZ licence
- Your car is a 1990 model or newer
- Your car is registered in New Zealand
- You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)

- Uber Comfort
Uber Comfort is a ride option for driver-partners who have completed over 500 trips, maintained a rating of 4.85 or above, and drive an eligible vehicle manufactured within the last 7 years.
