How to take trips with cash payment
In some regions of the world, the Uber app offers users the option of trips with cash payment. Users can pay in cash instead of using the app's automatic billing.
How do these trips work?
1. Complete the trip as usual. Accept the request and drive to the destination just like you do today.
2. Check the amount and collect the cash. Upon arrival, the app will display the exact amount to be charged.
3. Confirm the payment. If the rider pays the full amount shown in the app, simply confirm and end the trip.
4. Reported a lower amount? Wait for quick confirmation. If you received less than the total amount (partial payment), enter the exact amount in the app. At this point, we will ask you to wait a few moments while we send a notification for the rider to confirm the payment.
Don't worry: This step is super fast (about 20 seconds) and is designed to protect your balance, preventing future disputes.
5. Finish with the underpaid amount added to your balance. Once the rider confirms, the trip is ended. If the amount paid was less than the total, Uber will make the adjustment and credit the missing amount directly to your balance, ensuring you don't lose out.
Why take trips with cash payment?
Cash payment trips allow more people to choose Uber. This means more opportunities for you. By accepting cash, your payout is made on the spot. A portion of your cash earnings includes Uber's service fee. You can track your outstanding balance in the app.
Tips for a smooth experience
Preparing for cash trips goes beyond the app. Check out these recommendations from experienced drivers to ensure your safety and efficiency:
Make change easy, speed up the trip
Cash trips are great, but to keep the payment process fast and save you time:
Always carry a "change kit": Having smaller bills and coins makes it easier to settle the exact amount.
Golden tip: We suggest starting the day with a small amount distributed in $20, $50 bills and coins. This avoids unnecessary stops to get change.
Your safety comes first
Don't let large amounts of cash accumulate in the car: If you've had a productive day with many cash trips, try to deposit your earnings regularly.
Use technology to your advantage: Avoid driving around with a high volume of cash. Plan stops in safe locations to manage what you’ve collected during your shift.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I know if the trip will be paid in cash?
You will see this information as soon as you arrive at the pickup point. If the payment is to be made in cash, this information will be displayed on the screen along with the other trip details.
- What do I do if the passenger doesn't pay the full amount (partial payment)?
Don't worry, you won't lose out. If the amount received is less than the total:
1. Report the exact amount you received in the app.
2. The app will send a quick confirmation notification to the passenger.
3. Once they confirm (it takes about 20 seconds), Uber adjusts your balance and guarantees the remaining amount directly in your account.
- What if the rider pays more than the trip fare?
Don't worry, the process in the app is the same! If the rider chooses to leave the change as credit, simply enter the total amount you received. The difference will be automatically added as credit to the rider’s account for their next trip. In this specific case, the system processes the credit directly, without the need for the bilateral confirmation screen.
- What happens if the rider doesn't confirm right away or disputes the amount later? Do I lose my money?
No, you don’t lose your money! Ideally, the confirmation should be done on the spot to ensure transparency, but we know unexpected things happen (like the rider being out of data or the trip being requested by someone else).
- If there's no immediate confirmation: You can use the "Escape Hatch" (the "User is unable to respond" button) and end the trip normally.
- Regarding disputes: Regardless of the rider’s later response, the amount you reported and your earnings for that trip will remain protected.
- What if I forget to charge or the user doesn't pay anything?
If the user doesn't have the money, there is no need to argue. Simply report in the app that the amount received was $0.00 and follow the confirmation process. You will not lose out.
- What if the user wants to pay with cash on an electronic payment trip?
Uber does not allow electronic payment trips to be paid in cash. If at the end of an electronic payment trip the user wants to pay in cash, don't worry: your earnings payout will be made normally.
- Is the toll amount already included in the cash total?
Yes! The amount that appears on the app's summary screen already includes the tolls you paid during the route.
- What happens if the user doesn't want to pay the amount corresponding to the Uber One subscription or pays a partial amount?
Non-payment or partial payment of the Uber One subscription fee does not affect your trip earnings. You will always be paid for the trips you make. When necessary, Uber will cover the cost of the trip in the partner app.
If, for any reason, the user does not have the amount corresponding to the Uber One subscription fee, they can cancel the charge in the app and the change will also be updated in the partner app. Even if the user does not make adjustments in the app, don't worry. Complete the trip by entering the amount received, as usual, and Uber will make the necessary adjustments with the user.
- What is Uber One?
Uber One is a subscription option which gives users access to benefits such as savings on Uber and Uber Eats. For more details, visit (https://www.uber.com/mx/es/u/uber-one/)
