Tomorrow morning the City of Zagreb is voting on a proposal that if passed will mean there will be less choice in how citizens get around town. Less choice ultimately leads to higher prices for local consumers. It will also limit the possibilities of local people getting new work as professional drivers as demand for transport services is growing partly because of the increase of foreign tourists visiting this great city and country.

Uber will continue to operate in Zagreb and is committed to serving local riders and drivers and we are communicating our concerns around the new proposals as we believe that regulation should reflect the needs of the citizens of Zagreb, tourists and new technology.

  • The huge interest of our customers and over 100.000 app openings in last 6 months all over Croatia (see map in header). Furthermore, over the last month tourists from 46 countries who were visiting Zagreb also used Uber!
  • The proposed limits on new taxi licenses will have a negative impact on the economic growth of the whole business sector, but also on the further economic growth of the City as a whole. For example, tourism continues to grow in Croatia and Zagreb, which registered a 14.5% growth, or over 140,000 visitors, in August 2015.
  • Zagreb is still lagging behind comparable cities in Central Europe regarding the number of taxi licences. In Bratislava, for example, there are around 3,000 taxi drivers or 6 taxis per 1,000 residents, in Warsaw there are 13,000 taxi drivers or 7.7 taxis per 1,000, while the citizens of Zagreb are served by only 1,200 taxis or 1.7 taxis per 1,000 residents.

See more on the benefits that Uber can bring to Croatia from the perspective of one of the leading economists and business journalists in Croatia, Željko Ivanković, in article on Jutarnji.hr

Uber in Croatia can be stopped only at our own expense. If they try to stop Uber, City Assembly will only bring damage to Zagreb. Uber or other similar technology platforms, not just in taxi services, rapidly become the world standard. They are inevitable and unstoppable… The best regulation is the regulation that stimulates economic activity. Taxes will be collected either from the taxi drivers or from Uber, if it decides that Zagreb is a good place for its regional center of operations. Instead of driving it out, we should try to bring it in.“
