Clean Air Plan Update
Uber

Three years ago we launched our Clean Air Plan in London to help every driver transition to an electric vehicle (EV) by 2025.

This is part of ambitious commitments to become an emission-free mobility platform by 2030 in Europe and North America: embracing our role in the generational challenge to clean up urban transport.

To get there, we pledged to support drivers in becoming the early mass adopters of EVs. This is happening already and the progress we are seeing in London means the capital is leading the way globally in terms of Uber’s electrification efforts.

Petrol or diesel cars now account for well under half of all miles driven on Uber in London. In 2021, the overall percentage of miles driven by EVs in London more than doubled from 4% in January to 10% by the end of the year. This significant progress means that we are on track to meet our ambitious goal to electrify every vehicle in London by 2025.

We see 2022 as a critically important year. With the right incentives and support for drivers now in place, there is a real opportunity to accelerate the pace of transition to EVs for Uber drivers.

In London, drivers are adopting EVs at a much faster rate than the general public – over 10 per cent of vehicles on Uber are now fully electric, compared to only 2 per cent in the mass market. There are now over 5,000 EVs in London, up from just 100 EVs in January 2019 when we launched Uber’s Clean Air Plan. We are on track to reach over 10,000 EVs by the end of the year, as more drivers use the £145m funding that has been raised for them.

All drivers in the capital have been building individual saving pots following the introduction of a Clean Air Fee on all trips in London. We see that most drivers decide to switch to electric once they reach around £3,000. We therefore expect the accumulated fund to be sufficient to support all of our remaining drivers in London to switch by 2025.

Therefore, as we enter the next stage of our Clean Air Plan, we will stop collecting a Clean Air Fee, instead focusing on supporting drivers to use these funds to switch to an EV. Drivers can use their Clean Air Fund to:

  • Purchase EVs at discounted rates thanks to our partnerships with Nissan, Hyundai and Kia.
  • Lease electric vehicles through our partnerships with Otto, WeFlex and Breathe.
  • Access low interest rates of less than 6% when financing the purchase of an EV.

We are planning for significant growth in the number of EVs in London as drivers spend their Clean Air Fund. This means that we can expand Uber Green from zone one in London to the whole of the city. Drivers will receive higher earnings through Uber Green, as well as lower running costs.

An additional £5 million investment from Uber will also see over 500 new EV charging points installed in areas where drivers live, helping to grow London’s EV Charge Point Network by more than 5%.

EV drivers currently save up to £27.50 every day through exemptions to the ULEZ and congestion charge. Switching vehicles is a big decision for drivers, but with lower running costs and greater earning potential, there has never been a better time to do it.

Uber is committed to becoming a fully electric platform in London by 2025 and across the UK by 2030. There is still a lot of work to do to drive a green recovery and clean up urban transport, but the future is green and we will continue to support drivers in getting there.
