We’re aware of the messages regarding an alleged safety incident currently circulating on WhatsApp and across social media, and we’d like to take this opportunity to clarify a few things.
As soon as we heard about these incidents, our Incident Response Team (IRT)reached out to both the rider and driver, as part of our investigation. We take any incident of this nature very seriously and will continue to investigate this matter. We’re in contact with law enforcement to assist their investigation in any way we can.
Every day, hundreds of riders in Uganda use Uber to move around their city safely and conveniently. We want this experience to be as smooth as possible, so we want you to know about the safety features we have in place for a safer ride.
How safety is built into your Uber experience from pick-up to drop-off:

Check the details:
Make sure you check the details in-app and get into the correct vehicle, with the correct driver! Be sure to:
✓ Check that both the vehicle make and colour matches – an image of the vehicle colour and type is provided in app.
✓ Identify the vehicle registration plate and cross-check with the app.
✓ Ask for your driver’s name and check the in-app photo – you also have the ability to click into and enlarge the driver photo in app.
Incident Response Team:
Located in cities around the world and trained to deal with any critical safety issues that arise – our IRT team are able to connect with law enforcement if necessary. In addition, riders have a dedicated call-back line that provides them with 24/7 access to speak to Uber’s Global Incident Response Team.

Law Enforcement Response Team:
Our on-call Law Enforcement Response Team works with police to respond to urgent needs, and to walk them through how Uber can assist in an investigation.
Trusted Contacts:
Riders can select up to 5 friends and family members as Trusted Contacts and choose to be prompted to share trip details with them during every ride. They can watch your trip in real-time so that they know exactly when you arrive. Also, all Uber rides are tracked by GPS from start to finish so there’s a record of your trip if something happens.

In-app support:
The in-app “Help” service can be accessed within the Uber app by tapping the menu icon (three bars) in the top left hand corner. Riders can then navigate and tap on the “help” icon, scroll down and report the issue at hand.
Driver screening:
All drivers must undergo a thorough screening process before they can use the Uber app. These include registering with a certificate of good conduct from Interpol.

Injury Protection:
Riders and drivers are covered in the unfortunate event of death or disability while on-trip. They will have access to medical cover (including ambulance service costs), death and funeral payments and permanent disability payments.
Your safety is our top priority. We never stop working to reduce incidents and set new standards, so you can stay connected and protected every time you ride with us. Because, safety never stops.
