Uber is all about making getting from A to B as easy as possible – and that includes paying for your ride. That’s why, as part of our contribution towards making India a cashless economy we’re excited to announce the launch of another choice for riders. You now have one more option to make a secure payment for your Uber rides using your bank account through UPI.
Currently, this is only available to a few riders. We will be rolling this out in a phased manner. If you don’t see the option in your account currently, don’t worry, your UPI payment option will arrive soon. Watch this space for more as we drive forward towards a digital India.
What is NPCI?
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is an umbrella organization for all retail payments system in India. It was set up with the guidance and support of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Indian Banks’ Association (IBA).
What is a UPI?

Can I switch to UPI as a payment method during my Uber ride?
No. The payment method needs to be selected at the beginning of your Uber ride.
While adding my UPI account, why was I charged a fee of Re.1?
This is only an authorisation fee which is used to retrieve and verify your bank details. This will be credited back to your account in 3 – 5 working days of linking your payment address to your Uber account.
Can I clear outstanding bill amounts using UPI?
Yes. You can use a UPI account linked to your Uber account to clear the outstanding bill amount.
My payment failed mid way through the transaction. However, the amount seems to have been deducted from my bank account?
Incase of an issue in processing payment through UPI, the amount will get refund to your bank account.
How can I make UPI my default payment method?
You can set the default payment method on your Uber app by following the below steps:
- Login to your app
- Tap the menu icon on the top left to open the settings section
- Tap the home icon and select the “Personal” profile
- Once you tap on personal, you will find two options, email receipts and default payment.
- Tap on default payment and change the select the payment you would like to use on the trips.
- This should set the default payment method on your account
How can I delete the linked UPI account?
Your account must have at least one payment method at all times. If you wish to delete your only payment method, you’ll need to add a new one first.
- Select “Payment” from your menu.
- Select the payment instrument you’d like to delete.
- Tap the three dot icon in the upper right corner.
- Tap DELETE, then confirm.
Is it secure? Why am I sharing my bank details with Uber?
Yes, absolutely. Uber does not store bank details of any rider. The payment address linked to the account is stored only for transactional purposes. The payment address only allows the Uber app to request for the right fare amount at the end of the Uber ride. This amount can be processed only after required approval from you through the linked UPI app.

What happens if I delete/ edit the linked payment address in my UPI app?
In case the linked payment address has been edited / deleted, UPI will not show up as an available payment option. You will have to link your UPI account to the Uber using the new payment address.
I did not accept payment for my Uber ride on the UPI app.
Incase you are unable to accept the payment through your UPI app, the fare amount for the last trip will remain as an unpaid amount. The next time you are trying to request a ride, you will have to clear this amount before requesting.
