Uber is joining forces with ZA International (“ZA”) to pledge HK$8 million to launch the ZA x Uber Relief Program¹, which will provide extra relief to driver-partners on the Uber platform if they test positive for COVID-19 and are required to quarantine. With Hong Kong planning to begin easing restrictions in late April, this program will give Uber driver-partners peace of mind as they start moving more Hong Kongers around the city again while empowering them to regain control over their earnings.

From 11 April until 11 July 2022, active Uber driver-partners (including Uber Taxi driver-partners) who test positive for COVID-19 and are required to quarantine are eligible for a one-off HK$2,000 per driver financial assistance from the ZA x Uber Relief Program. This is the city’s first-of-its-kind COVID-19 relief program from ZA that is tailored for driver-partners on the Uber platform. With reference to HKSAR Government’s self-reporting policy, ZA will recognize positive COVID-19 results from the Hong Kong government’s self-reporting system, as well as valid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test results issued by the government or testing institutions recognized by the authority.

Commenting on the program, Mr. Lam, an Uber Taxi driver-partner since 2019, says, “It has no doubt been a tough couple of months trying to keep my family safe while driving just enough to cover our monthly expenses. I really appreciate Uber and ZA Bank coming together to help driver-partners like myself. With the support of this program, I won’t need to worry as much about testing positive for COVID-19 and not being able to support the basic needs of my family.”

Wayne Xu, President of ZA International, says, “Supporting the community is a central part of ZA’s DNA. We are excited to partner with Uber, who shares our values, to launch this program to provide timely, flexible, and relevant support to the local community. Throughout the pandemic, Uber driver-partners have worked tirelessly to not only support their families, but also frontline healthcare workers and citizens who still have commuting needs. We hope that the program, funded collectively by Uber and ZA, will be able to support a broader range of Uber driver-partners and help the city get back on the road to recovery.”

Estyn Chung, General Manager of Uber Hong Kong says, “A lot of driver-partners have been off the road the last few months to keep their family and community safe. We are pleased to see that the number of COVID-19 cases are coming down, and are looking forward to the city opening up again as restrictions are lifted. We are ready to help riders get to where they need to be, and ensure we continue to offer a flexible and reliable platform for driver-partners. We appreciate ZA’s partnership to assist driver-partners as the city recovers, we hope this will allow them to regain control over their earnings as they buckle up and start driving again.”
