Today we are launching Uber Transit, a feature that enables riders to plan journeys across a range of public transport options utilizing real-time data. Uber has a strong vision for the future of transportation in Hong Kong, and this is one of many products we hope to introduce to the City, consistent with our commitment to invest, introduce innovative technology, and create jobs. However, progress on ridesharing regulations is critical to enable further investment.

Integrated public transport is an essential component for building the smart cities of the future and maintaining Hong Kong’s competitive edge. Efficient and transparent transport options powered by integrated transit systems can save Hong Kongers time and money, and improve the city’s productivity.

But for Uber, the journey planning feature in Uber Transit is just the first step. Our vision is to provide an end-to-end journey experience by integrating ridesharing and different modes of transport within the app, including ticketing and payment, and first/last mile rideshare connectivity. The launch of Uber Transit will strengthen the synergies between ridesharing and the existing public transport network, and help modernize how transit authorities operate across their suite of services.

Estyn Chung, General Manager of Uber in Hong Kong said, “As the global economy enters one of the steepest recessions of a generation, continual investment in productivity gains are vital in order to put Hong Kong on a path to sustainable recovery. Bringing Uber Transit to Hong Kong enables us to work towards our commitment to increase the city’s productivity and making movement around the city seamless. Around the world, we see many Uber trips begin and end at transit stations, and today’s announcement is about maximizing these synergies to help Hong Kong move better.”

“We recognize that transit and Uber can be a powerful combination, and today’s announcement is just the first step. We look forward to partnering with various local public transportation agencies – together we can power smart mobility in Hong Kong.”

More information, and more options to plan your journey

Uber Transit gives riders a seamless way to look at all the options within one app. Uber users can now plan journeys across Hong Kong with the help of a comprehensive overview of public transit information and step-by-step navigation in the app. It includes real-time information and schedules* for MTR, minibuses, trams, buses, and private estate shuttles, allowing users to choose the fastest and cheapest route to get to their destination.

After entering a destination into the app, users get to see “Transit” below other more familiar options like UberX and Taxi, along with an estimated price. On selecting “Transit,” the app surfaces MTR, bus, and other modes of transit with real-time scheduling, arrival and departure times, pricing, information on stops, and walking directions to the destination. Users have the option of customizing each Uber Transit journey by choosing preferred modes of transit and route, as well as the ability to rate and provide feedback at the end of each Uber Transit journey. The feature will be gradually rolled out to all Hong Kong users by the end of the month.

Elevating the City’s transit system

Since 2019, Uber Transit has been introduced in more than 15 cities around the world, and Hong Kong is our first launch destination in North Asia. These partnerships include the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in India to integrate the city’s Metro and public bus service; the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the US and Town of Innisfil, Ontario in Canada to provide service to areas outside the reach of conventional transit; and in Nice, France to provide late-night connecting service to rail lines.

The launch of Uber Transit in Hong Kong is another sign of Uber’s commitment to Hong Kong and the millions of Hong Kongers who use Uber’s technology. It follows the recent announcement to double down on our investment in the city by moving our regional HQ and setting up an innovation and engineering hub here.
