Uber announced today its partnership with Lee Kin Driving School to offer taxi drivers across the city free safety courses with the aim to improve road safety. The 4-hour course is open to all taxi drivers subject to availability, including those who don’t currently partner with Uber.

Road safety is a key concern in Hong Kong, as evidenced by the occurrence of over 15,000 crashes across the territory last year, according to the Transport Department. Uber is committed to investing in road safety products and collaborating with advocates to improve road safety both within and beyond our platform. Taxi drivers spend a disproportionate amount of time on the road and often encounter various challenges including complex traffic conditions, the introduction of new car models and extreme weather conditions. To address these specific concerns, a specialized road safety course has been developed through the partnership.

“The Driver Safety Course is a great way for taxi drivers to refresh and improve their skills,” said Estyn Chung, General Manager of Uber Hong Kong.” Road safety is a complex topic and requires action from the government and society as a whole, and as the city’s leading mobility app we are committed to making our streets safer. We’re delighted to partner with a leading driving school in HK to give refresher training for taxi drivers-partners and join forces to enhance road safety. We strongly believe that Uber + Taxi are better together, and we hope this course not only enriches driver-partners’ safety knowledge, but also improves taxi experience for the general public. ”

Road Safety Course welcomes all taxi drivers to join free-of-charge

The course will be a 4-hour long in person course covering three key areas, including vehicle operation, road safety, and customer service. Different from the usual driving courses which focus mainly on the Road Users’ Code, the Driver Safety Course will cover real life examples with case studies that reference recent road safety accidents. The course will also share best practices on customer services, including how to assist the elderly and the disabled. The course is fully funded by Uber and is free of charge for participants. All taxi drivers (including non-Uber platform users) are welcome to join the class.

“Our partnership with Uber is a significant step towards our mission of enhancing road safety in Hong Kong,” said Ada Wong, Executive Manager of Lee Kin Driving School. “Rather than simply revisiting the usual road safety guidelines, we specially designed this course with case studies taking reference to a few recent road safety related accidents. Using real life examples will help drivers better absorb the content. We firmly believe that with proper training, drivers can be better equipped with safety tips that help them deal with unexpected situations. This is an essential step in achieving the city’s vision of making this one of the world’s safest cities for road users.”

Uber’s Commitment to Road Safety

Safety is at the heart of Uber, from our cutting-edge technology to robust screenings and policies, we have built the app with safety in mind. Every Uber trip booked in Hong Kong is insured, and the Uber app is equipped with a series of safety features in place with the aim to keep our platform users safe , including on-trip reporting, share my trip, GPS tracking, 24/7 support, and deactivation protocols for both riders and driver-partners who violate our Community Guidelines. To better assist our driver-partners to drive safely during their trips, the Uber app provides speed limit alerts and enable riders to report unsafe driving.
