Hongkongers are now back on the move, both internationally and domestically, since the lifting of mandatory hotel quarantine rules. As a trusted travel partner to Hong Kong, Uber is already seeing people begin getting out and about – whether to and from the airport, shopping or nightlife.

Moving Forward: Surge in Airport Travel

In the first two weeks since Hong Kong removed hotel quarantine measures on September 26, Uber has seen rides from the Hong Kong International Airport more than double compared to that of the first quarter of 2022. Go-getters are starting their travel early, with 8.00 a.m. the peak time. Among Hong Kong’s 18 districts, riders in Yau Tsim Mong district are racking up the most rides.

Estyn Chung, General Manager of Uber Hong Kong says, “We welcome the Government’s policy to remove hotel quarantine measures, and see it as a big step towards reconnecting Hong Kong with the world. Uber is here to help all travelers go anywhere in the city or overseas for business meetings, international financial summits, sports events, or vacations. We are committed to helping social and commercial life in Hong Kong with a convenient and smooth Uber experience. Our focus is on growing the local transportation industry.”

Rise in Trips Around the Town as Hongkongers Get Social Again

Beyond trips to and from the airport, Hongkongers are starting to move around more frequently within the city. From July through September this year, we saw a more than 40 percent increase in rides during weekdays peak hours*, signaling movement from hybrid work to a return to office. CBD areas such as Landmark, Bank of China Tower, ifc, and Lee Garden are the top locations.

After a long week at work, it’s clear that Hong Kong wants to unwind and take in all that the city nightlife and entertainment scene has to offer. Travel on Friday evenings** has doubled over the last three months compared to the first three months of the year. There has also been a more than 40 percent increase in rides to entertainment venues on weekends, showing that Hongkongers are getting together to enjoy fun experiences. Hong Kong’s greatest venues. K11 MUSEA  was the top destination when it comes to reconnecting with friends and families after a week long hard work.

Lan Kwai Fong is Back! – Shift of Destinations as Social Distancing Measures Relaxed

After two years of the pandemic, the party hotspot made its comeback between July and September as one of the top five drop-off locations during weekends, replacing Central Ferry Pier in the first quarter of the year. The long-awaited comeback for bars, clubs and restaurants finally brings nightlife back to our city as more riders are staying in Central for nightlife fun.

Shopping remains a favorite with people in Hong Kong. While K11 MUSEA retained the crown of most popular destination on the weekends throughout the first and third quarters, West Kowloon Cultural District and ifc mall  also remained in the top five most popular drop-off locations. A new hotspot joined the shopping list this quarter – Harbour City – as it became the fourth most popular drop-off destination.

As Hong Kong resumes a more normal pace of life and people spend the weekend exploring destinations from shopping malls to entertainment venues and everywhere in between, Uber has got you covered.

What’s more? From now until October 31 2022, Uber is offering a 15% discount (up to HK$50 per trip) to the first 2,500 riders who book their next Uber ride to or from Hong Kong International Airport applying the promo code “HKGAIRPORT”^.
