On 1 June 2018 we submitted Uber’s contribution to the Employment Status Consultation in the UK. Our submission is intended to be:

(i) Positive – in tone and content, explaining the many ways Uber is demonstrating that we can and are working within the confines of an uncertain legal setting to provide support and protection to those using our app, while preserving the freedom and flexibility which is at the heart of our offering to drivers. (ii) Informative – bringing tangible and practical experiences to the Government on some of the unintended consequences of seeking to reclassify those using apps such as ours. (iii) Reflective – on our ongoing litigation in the UK set against the current legal framework, and the disincentives it creates for apps wanting to support those using them. (iv) Encouraging – Government to bring clarity and certainty in this area in a way that recognises and encourages genuine two-way flexibility and the quality of work that can flow from it.

The submissions put forward will now be analysed by Government, which is considering whether the options proposed in the Taylor Review of Modern Work Practices could achieve more certainty and clarity for businesses when determining employment status, particularly in relation to the realities of the modern labour market.
