Uber presents: Journey Together

2 April / United Kingdom

Respect is at the heart of every journey

At Uber, we’re always working to ensure that everyone who uses our platform feels safe and comfortable, aiming to create a culture of respect across all our services.

Respect isn’t always about what you say, it’s also about how you act. Our actions and words can impact the safety and comfort of the people around us.

We’ve put together a guide to help everyone on the app – from riders and drivers, to couriers, customers and merchants – understand the impact they can make.

Read our Community Guidelines to explore our policies on threatening and rude behaviour, post-trip contact, physical contact, discrimination, sexual assault and misconduct, property damage and more.

Here’s a quick overview of our expected standards when using the Uber app.

Respect differences

You will encounter people from diverse backgrounds who may look or think differently. Please respect these differences.

Courtesy and manners

Shouting, swearing, door-slamming or other intimidating behaviour is unacceptable. Always try to be on time and if you’re taking a trip, leave the car in the same condition as when you entered.

Threatening and rude behaviour

Aggressive, confrontational, and harassing behaviour is not tolerated, including language or gestures that could be disrespectful, discriminatory, threatening, or inappropriate.

Physical contact

Don’t make physical contact with strangers unless someone requests physical assistance (for example a rider who may need help getting in and out of the vehicle). Hurting or intending to hurt anyone is never tolerated.

Sexual assault and misconduct

Respect personal space and privacy. It’s fine to chat while remaining respectful, but you should not comment on someone’s appearance or ask whether they are single.

Uber doesn’t tolerate any kind of sexual misconduct, harassment, or assault. Any type of sexual behaviour, such as flirting, inappropriate touching or gestures, or asking personal questions, is a violation of our Community Guidelines.

Discrimination

We do not tolerate racist or discriminatory words, actions or behaviour based on age, skin colour, disability, gender identity, marital status, pregnancy, national origin, race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, language, geographical location, or any other protected characteristic.

Property damage

Damaging property is never tolerated, including breaking or vandalising a vehicle, premises or electronic device, intentionally spilling food or drink, smoking in a car, or vomiting due to excessive alcohol consumption.

What to do if you experience disrespectful behaviour?

If you feel uncomfortable, you can report it to Uber. We take reports of intimidating or discriminatory behaviour very seriously. Select ‘Help’ in the Uber or Uber Eats app or visit help.uber.com.

If you’re ever in an emergency situation, please contact emergency services by tapping Emergency Assistance in your Safety Toolkit, or call 999.

Showing respect to drivers – rider tips

Image

When you ride with Uber, please be polite to your driver. Show up on time, greet them, and be careful not to damage or make a mess in their car. We know that sometimes you feel like a chat and other times you prefer peace and quiet – remember the driver can request the same – but if they’re chatty, avoid asking personal questions. When you reach your destination, it’s nice to thank the driver, give them a fair rating, and you can even give an in-app tip if you like.

Showing respect to riders – driver tips

We suggest you start the trip by greeting the passenger, asking for their name, so the right person gets in the car, and giving them time to sort out their seatbelt and get comfortable before you set off. It’s a nice touch to check that they’re ok with the temperature and music you’ve selected. It’s best not to take personal calls during a trip and be aware that although some riders like to chat, others prefer a quieter journey. We suggest avoiding asking personal questions to riders. Always drive carefully, following the rules of the road and you could say goodbye politely when they leave the car.

Showing respect to couriers – customer tips

Image

When you’re ordering on Uber Eats, make it a stress-free experience for the courier by adding as much detail as possible to the drop-off notes, double-checking it’s the right location, and doing your best to ensure it’s well-lit. Secure pets before they arrive and answer the door decently dressed, with your ID or PIN ready if ordering restricted items such as alcohol. Say ‘hi’, ‘bye’, and ‘thanks’ and leave them a thumbs up if you’re happy with their service. You can also add a tip.

Showing respect to customers – courier tips

When you pick up an order, remember to be patient with restaurant staff. We also ask that you please handle the delivery carefully and try not to spill or damage the order or packaging. When you drop off a delivery, we suggest that you greet the customer politely, and if it’s a leave-at-door delivery, place the order in a safe and protected place and take a clear picture of it.

Showing respect to couriers – merchant tips

Image

Even if you’re busy and don’t have time for personal interaction, always be polite to couriers when they come into the restaurant. Make deliveries easier by adding details like parking arrangements in your store’s courier pick-up instructions, clearly communicating wait times and double checking orders. Did they do a good job? Are they particularly friendly? Couriers will value positive feedback. You can use your Uber Eats orders tablet or Uber Eats Manager to give feedback about a courier when appropriate.

To create this guide, we spoke to riders, drivers, couriers, customers and merchants to understand what respect means to them. Watch the highlight reel here.
