Tips and advice for EV drivers

As electric vehicles become increasingly popular in the UK, it’s important for drivers to stay vigilant and take necessary measures to safeguard their investment. Our blog post aims to provide valuable insights and practical tips to help UK drivers protect themselves and their electric vehicles from theft and vandalism.

Utilise Physical Security Tools:

  • Steering Wheel Locks: Invest in a high-quality steering wheel lock as an effective visible deterrent, making it challenging for thieves to drive your EV away.
  • Wheel Clamps: Use wheel clamps to immobilise your EV, rendering it virtually impossible for thieves to steal your wheels.

Protect your Keys:

  • Key Blocking Wallets: Consider using a pouch or wallet that blocks electronic signals to prevent potential thieves from intercepting and cloning your keyless entry fob’s signal.

Choose Safe Parking Locations:

  • Well-Lit Areas: Park your EV in well-lit public areas, preferably with high foot traffic and surveillance cameras. Thieves are less likely to target cars in more exposed areas.
  • Secure Parking Facilities: When possible, opt for secure parking facilities that offer additional layers of protection like controlled access, CCTV cameras or gated access.

Stay Alert:

  • Avoid Leaving Valuables in Sight: Leaving valuable items visible in your EV can attract unwanted attention and tempt thieves. Keep your belongings out of sight by utilising storage compartments or taking them with you.
  • Social Media Caution: Be mindful about sharing your EV’s location or personal information on social media platforms, as it could inadvertently alert criminals.

Invest in Additional Security Measures:

  • Alarm Systems: Install an alarm system that includes motion sensors, immobilisers, and loud sirens. A sensitive alarm system adds an extra layer of defence against potential thieves.
  • CCTV/Dashcams: Consider installing CCTV or dashcams in and around your EV to deter vandalism and provide evidence if needed.
    • Need a dashcam? You can get a dashcam for £5.99 per week from Otto Car here.

Advice from EV Drivers:

We asked our EV Ambassadors their top tips for keeping their vehicles secure. Here’s what they said:

  • Charlie,While charging your car is probably the safest as the lead locks in, so it can’t be moved.”

  • Todor, “Having an Apple Airtag is another smart idea if you want to track your car.”

  • Eniola, “I use the under boot storage, like a safe deposit. So even if you peek into the boot you still see nothing of value.”

Remember to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. Let’s work together to create a safer environment for electric vehicle owners, enabling us to enjoy the benefits of cleaner and greener transportation.
