Shared rides are arriving now! We’re excited to announce that starting later this week UberX Share, our most affordable option, will be available in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.

Since pausing UberPool in Toronto in 2020 due to the pandemic, we have been working tirelessly to revamp the experience. And after months of listening to driver and rider feedback, redesigning, testing, and troubleshooting through various pilots around the globe, the new UberX Share will allow riders to:

  • Always save: As our most affordable option, riders will receive an upfront discount of up to 20% if they choose UberX Share. With an Uber One membership, riders get an additional 5% discount.
  • Make a sustainable choice: UberX Share provides a greener way to get from A to B, by moving more people with fewer cars to help your city avoid extra emissions and car travel by sharing your ride.
  • Stay on schedule: Look out the window, not at your watch. On average UberX Share only adds around 6 minutes to your trip when matched.

“We know affordability plays a role when people are making decisions on how to get from point A to B,” said Michael van Hemmen, General Manager of Uber Canada Mobility. “This new shared rides option will provide a more affordable and sustainable experience for riders and the cities we serve.”

At Uber, we know affordability is important to making transportation more accessible for more people—especially with the rise in inflation and the cost of living. Offering more affordable products isn’t just good for riders, it helps build out an ecosystem of affordable, multi-modal transportation—from shared rides, to micromobility, to public transit. Together we can chip away at our ultimate shared competitor: personal car ownership.

And as the largest mobility platform in the world, we know that our impact goes beyond our technology. We’re committed to providing sustainable, shared alternatives to the personal car and UberX Share is our newest way for people to be part of the climate solution. In 2022, we introduced Comfort Electric in Vancouver giving riders an opportunity to request a ride in a premium EV. And we have Uber Green in cities across the country, which is the most widely available on-demand mobility solution in the world to request no- or low-emission rides.

We’ve designed UberX Share to be better for drivers and similar to the driver experience with UberX  by giving drivers more choice. Drivers will earn the same recommended rates with UberX Share as they would with UberX but with more riders on a trip, a shared trip is likely to be longer and that means a higher fare. There will be a $1 pickup incentive for the driver when picking up a second rider.

We want you to move freely, make the most of your time, and be connected to the people and places that matter to you. That’s why we’re committed to safety with the aim of reducing incidents—from the creation of new standards to the development of technology to following public health guidelines on masks. Please be considerate if a driver or co-rider asks you to wear a mask in the car. Read more here.

Shared rides have long been a rider favourite, from the spontaneous singalongs to meeting new friends and other fun chance encounters. We believe UberX Share, and the improvements we’ve made for drivers and riders, will make it better than ever.
