Every trip is insured
Policies that help drivers
Our insurance policies work with your personal insurance coverage to protect you whenever you’re driving with Uber. Here’s how it works.
Insurance coverage in Canada
How it works
Insurance coverage is available between accepting and ending each trip.
Insurance coverage for when you are logged in but have not yet accepted a trip.
Your chosen insurance company and coverages apply when you are not driving on the Uber platform.
When you’re on a trip, your liability to third parties is covered by a $2 million insurance policy. It covers each and every incident that occurs between accepting a trip and reaching the rider’s destination. The coverage will be provided by Intact Insurance and will include:
$2 million of Liability
This insurance policy covers a rideshare driver's liability to third parties (riders) from the moment a driver accepts an Uber trip until its conclusion. This policy takes precedence over any personal auto coverage.
Statutory Ontario accident benefits
$2 million of Uninsured Automobile Coverage Protects vehicle occupants who are injured by a hit-and-run driver, an uninsured motorist, or an inadequately insured motorist. It also covers damage to your vehicle caused by an identified uninsured driver.
Direct Compensation – Property Damage Coverage
This statutory coverage pays for repairs to a driver’s vehicle, as well as related expenses, in the event of an accident that is not entirely the driver’s fault.
Contingent Collision and Comprehensive
This covers loss or physical damage to the rideshare driver’s vehicle up to the actual cash value of the vehicle with a $1,000 deductible. This coverage only applies if the vehicle is also insured for collision and comprehensive coverage on the auto policy of the vehicle owner when not used for ridesharing.
Coverage between trips
During the time that a ridesharing partner is available through the Uber app but has not yet accepted a trip, we maintain coverage that provides $1 million of third party liability and uninsured automobile coverage along with all of the other coverages listed above.
The certificate of insurance and link to the policy itself can be found here.
UberTAXI rides in Ontario are provided by commercially licensed and insured partners and drivers are covered by commercial insurance policies, in accordance with provincial and local requirements.
In the event of an accident during a trip, you and your passengers are protected by this policy. The policy covers civil liability and, in certain circumstances, loss or damage to the vehicle.
This insurance coverage includes:
$1 million civil liability coverage per incident
This covers a ridesharing driver’s civil liability to third parties from the moment a driver logs on the Uber app until the moment the driver logs off.
Coverage is provided for collision and upset, all perils other than collision and upset, travel expenses and value of damage, if the driver has the coverage on his/her own personal auto policy. The coverage and deductible payable by the driver are those included in his/her personal auto policy.
Driver partners remain responsible for maintaining their personal lines of insurance, which provide coverage when the driver is using their vehicle for personal use.
Every ridesharing driver operating on the Uber platform in Alberta will automatically be covered under this new ridesharing policy provided by Intact Insurance and purchased by Uber. This insurance coverage will include:
$2 million of third party liability coverage per incident
This covers a rideshare driver’s liability to third parties from the moment a driver accepts an Uber trip until its conclusion.
Alberta statutory accident benefits
Uninsured motorist coverage per incident If another motorist causes an accident with a rideshare vehicle and that motorist doesn’t carry insurance or cannot be identified, this policy covers bodily injury to all occupants of the rideshare vehicle. This is important to ensure protection in a hit and run.
Loss or damage to a vehicle
From the time a driver has accepted a trip until its completion, this policy covers loss or damage to the vehicle (deductible may apply).
Coverage between trips
During the time that a ridesharing partner is available through the Uber app but has not yet accepted a trip, we maintain coverages consisting of $1 million of third party liability in the event that the rideshare driver’s own insurer denies coverage. Statutory accident benefits and uninsured motorist coverage are also included.
The certificate of insurance and link to the policy itself can be found here. Intact Insurance, Novex, belairdirect, and Pembridge offer personal auto insurance policies for ridesharing. The provincial Transportation Network Company Certificate of approval is here. Note: In Canada, Uber driver-partners are able to accept requests for ridesharing services through the Uber app after contracting with Rasier Operations B.V.
As a rideshare driver, you do not need to adjust your personal auto insurance policies. You will continue to pay for your plates and receive the SGI basic insurance coverage as you do today. Uber will pay an additional premium to SGI so that your basic insurance will not exclude ridesharing activity - i.e. the time period from when you have accepted a ride via the Uber app until the trip is completed or the ride is cancelled.
If you’re engaged in ridesharing activity and are responsible for a collision, your personal package policy (e.g. SGI CANADA Auto Pak) will not apply. Uber has purchased a policy from SGI Canada designed to apply during ridesharing activity. Basic plate insurance will still apply, but the Uber purchased liability insurance will apply if damages exceed $200,000 (the liability insurance included with basic plate insurance).
The Uber purchased policy provides $2M in liability limits. The policy also includes $2M of uninsured motorist cover. A link to the policy is here. A link to the certificate of insurance for the policy is here.
If you have purchased an Auto Pak policy to lower your deductible, or for replacement cost coverage if you’re involved in a collision, that coverage will not apply if you’re involved in a collision while engaged in ridesharing activity. If you’re driving your vehicle for personal use (i.e. not engaged in ridesharing activity), your package policy will apply in the event of a collision.
All uberTAXI rides are provided by commercially licensed and insured partners and drivers. Those transportation providers are covered by commercial insurance policies in accordance with provincial requirements.
