Every trip is insured
Auto insurance that helps protect you
Uber maintains commercial auto insurance to help protect you in case of a covered accident while ridesharing on the Uber app. Here’s how it works.
All coverages are subject to the policy terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.
What rideshare drivers should know about coverage
The commercial auto insurance policy issued by Economical covers you from the moment you make yourself available to accept a ride in the Uber app to the moment the request is completed. When providing ridesharing, this coverage also helps protect your passengers from the moment you pick them up to the moment they exit your vehicle.
When you’re using your vehicle for personal use, you have to rely on your own personal auto insurance policy, which must be in force in order for you to drive with Uber.
Offline: Down time
When you're using your vehicle for personal use, your personal car insurance policy applies.
Period 1: Ready to ride
When you're logged into the Uber app and available for a request, your personal car insurance coverage may apply depending on your province, but coverage may also be available through the commercial auto insurance policy issued by Economical. Please see your province's policy for details.
Period 2: Request accepted
When you've accepted a request on the Uber app and you're on your way to pick up a passenger or delivery, you're covered by the commercial auto insurance policy issued by Economical.
Period 3: In transit
When you've picked up your passenger or delivery and you're on your way to the drop-off destination, you're covered by the commercial auto insurance policy issued by Economcial.
Note: You’re responsible for informing your broker or insurance provider that you’re participating in ridesharing or delivery activities so they can make sure you have the personal car insurance you need before you get behind the wheel.

Saskatchewan
As a rideshare driver in Saskatchewan, you do not need to adjust your personal auto insurance policy. You will continue to pay for your plates and receive the SGI basic insurance coverage as you do today. Uber will pay an additional premium to SGI so that your basic insurance will not exclude ridesharing activity - i.e. the time period from when you have accepted a ride via the Uber app until the trip is completed or the ride is cancelled.
If you’re engaged in ridesharing activity and are responsible for a collision, basic plate insurance will still apply. Additional Uber purchased liability insurance will apply if damages exceed $200,000 (the liability insurance included with basic plate insurance).
The Uber purchased policy provides $2 million in liability limits. The policy also includes $2 million of uninsured motorist coverage. A link to the certificate of insurance is here.
If you have purchased an Auto Pak policy to lower your deductible, or for replacement cost coverage if you’re involved in a collision, that coverage will not apply if you’re involved in a collision while engaged in ridesharing activity. If you’re driving your vehicle for personal use (i.e. not engaged in ridesharing activity), your package policy will apply in the event of a collision.
British Columbia
As a rideshare driver in British Columbia, you do not need to adjust your personal auto insurance policy. You will continue to pay for your plates and receive the same personal auto insurance coverage as you do today.
Your personal auto insurance will apply to a covered accident while using your vehicle for personal use and while driving on the Uber app but prior to accepting a ride request.
Once you’ve accepted a ride request on the Uber app and you are en-route to pick up the rider(s) or travelling with the rider(s), Uber maintains commercial auto insurance on your behalf. This Uber purchased policy includes $2 million in third-party liability limits, as well as contingent physical damage coverage (subject to a $2,500 deductible). A link to the certificate of insurance for the policy is here.
Commercial coverage for Uber Black
To provide Uber Black rides, you must be a professional limousine driver with a commercial licence and commercial insurance.
