Last year, following a pandemic hiatus, we relaunched the Uber x Red Cross Clothing Drive, enabling Aussies to donate their quality, preloved clothing to Red Cross ops shops for free, direct from their doorsteps. We were absolutely delighted to have collected 43,000kg of clothing in one day – that’s the same amount Australian Red Cross usually collects in three months!

With natural disasters repeatedly impacting Australia’s most vulnerable communities, we want to ensure Aussies know that they can still make a significant contribution to supporting Red Cross’ work this year, without having to open their wallets.

That’s why we’re calling on Australia to get behind the Uber x Red Cross Clothing Drive more than ever this year, with a huge ambition of donating 60,000 kilograms of quality, preloved clothing this Saturday 21st October.

By offering free ‘Uber Package’ pick up and delivery to Red Cross Shop drop off locations across Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, we’re making it easier than ever to donate quality pre-loved clothing to those in need.

Here’s how you can get involved

  1. Declutter that wardrobe: When it comes to decluttering your wardrobe, adopt a pragmatic approach. If you haven’t worn an item in the last 12 months but it’s still in great condition, consider donating it. Red Cross is on the lookout for high-quality, saleable clothing and accessories. They can’t accept homewares, underwear, or clothing that’s worn out or dirty. If it’s something you’d happily give to a friend due to its quality, it’s definitely something Red Cross would appreciate!
  2. Create pre-loved bundles: Gather your pre-loved items into a bag or box, no heavier than 20kg, so it comfortably sits in the boot of a midsize car.
  3. Prepare for Uber Package Pick-up: Open the Uber app between 09:00 to 16:00 local time on 21 October 2023, navigate to the “Package” option:
    • Click “Send a package”, enter “Red Cross Shop” as the destination, and the delivery will be directed to your closest drop off point. Alternatively, you may see a banner in the app relating to the Clothing Drive, which when clicked on will direct your delivery to your closest Red Cross drop off centre. Remember, you need to be located in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney to redeem the free delivery, and it is only redeemable once, on Saturday 21st October. Eligible customers will see a $0 amount payable when they book an Uber Package with the drop off location set to one of the Red Cross Clothing Drive Drop off locations.
  4. Donate from your doorstep: You’ll have real-time tracking of the delivery person’s arrival in the Uber app, so you can easily meet them at your doorstep, or curbside to hand over your donation. You can also follow the trip status live once the delivery person picks it up, and enjoy that feel good buzz of donating, as they transport it to Red Cross sorting centres!

By donating quality, pre-loved and clean clothing, you are helping contribute valuable funds to Red Cross humanitarian programs. These programs offer support where it’s needed every day of the year.

Dom Taylor, General Manager of Uber ANZ:With natural disasters repeatedly wreaking havoc on some of Australia’s most vulnerable communities, we want to ensure Aussies know that they can make a significant contribution to supporting communities without having to open their wallets. The Uber and Australian Red Cross Clothing Drive makes it easier than ever for Aussies to donate their pre-loved clothing by offering free picks up directly from their doorstep to Australian Red Cross sorting centres on Saturday 21st October. It’s a no brainer; if you want to support vulnerable Aussie communities but aren’t sure how to beyond cash donations or volunteering your time, consider spring cleaning your wardrobe and donating your preloved clothing.”

Richard Wood, Head of Retail at Australian Red Cross: “We know many Aussies are feeling the pinch, but it’s not just financial donations that can make a difference. There are so many ways people can donate to support those in need, including donating quality items of clothing, shopping at an Australian Red Cross store or volunteering your time. Australian Red Cross brings people and communities together in times of need and participating in the Uber Clothing Drive, you are enabling us to raise funds to continue delivering this work.”
