Step-by-step Guide: How to apply for an ABN as a delivery person with Uber Eats

19 May / Australia

To deliver with Uber Eats in Australia, you’ll need to register for an ABN (Australian Business Number). It’s free, simple, and allows you to operate as an independent contractor.

This guide will provide you the details typically used by people who deliver with Uber Eats when answering questions to apply for an ABN.

How to Apply for an ABN

1. Visit the ABR Website
Go to the Australian Business Register (ABR) and click “Apply or reapply for an ABN” to start your application.

2. ABN Entitlement

  • “For taxation purposes, what type of entity is the applicant?” → Individual / Sole Trader
  • “Will your activities be carried out in Australia?” → Yes
  • “Have you started or are you taking steps to start your activity?” → Yes
  • “What is the nature of your activity?” → In the form of a business
  • “Are you doing things that are consistent with running a business?” → Yes

3. Application Details

  • If you already have an ABN, enter it when prompted.
  • If not, select “Yes” when asked whether you wish to apply or reapply for an ABN.

Note: If you already have an active ABN, the new application may not be accepted.

Tax File Number (TFN):

  • “Does the applicant have a TFN?” → Select Yes if you do.
  • “Does the applicant wish to apply for a TFN?” → Select No unless you’re applying for one now.

Providing your TFN helps speed up the ABN approval process.

4. Tax Residency Information

  • Are you an Australian resident for tax purposes?
    • If you’re on a student visa or working visa or a permanent resident or citizen, you’d typically select Yes and leave the registered agent field blank.
    • If you’re on a working holiday visa, you’d typically select No.

5. Applicant Information

  • Enter your legal name exactly as shown on your ID (e.g. passport, driver’s licence).
  • Enter your date of birth.
  • Enter your TFN if you have one.

6. Business Activity Details

Start Date

  • “From what date does the Individual/Sole Trader require its ABN?”
→ Enter today’s date or the date you plan to start delivering.

Business Activity

  • Description: Food delivery
  • Business Category: Select Food delivery service for restaurants
  • Does the Individual/Sole Trader operate an agricultural property? No.

7. Main Business Location

  • You’d typically use your home address as the business address.
  • Select Yes if your postal address is the same.
  • Enter your email and mobile number.

8. Reason for Application

  • Select Contractor / Sub-contractor
  • If this is your first time working as a contractor, select Yes
