Uber Dubai Puts Safety First
Written byWe organized our first Driver Safety workshop in Dubai, as part of a wider initiative across the Middle-East and Africa region, which gathered over 30 drivers, Dubai Police Force and The Road and Transport Authority representatives (RTA) at Uber Dubai Offices. During the session, the Uber team and representatives from the Dubai Police presented safety tips for those behind the wheel, but also educated drivers about traffic laws in the city. The drivers now have easy access to the safety tips through the Uber app, to help protect their riders as well as encourage them to stay safe before, during and after every ride.
Drivers also had the opportunity to ask questions and get their concerns answered by various spokespeople, which helped to ensure the session was both collaborative and insightful. Safety remains a priority for Uber, and although no means of transportation can be 100% free of incidents, we are continuously looking for ways to improve it.
A very impactful presentation from Dubai Police focused on the importance of Safety on the roads, and how each and every member of the society can contribute towards the future of Dubai. The Dubai Police presentation demonstrated to drivers the latest local traffic laws and the steps and tips they need to take to ensure their rides are as safe as possible.
The safety tips presented to drivers included:
- Stay Focused on Driving: You can help keep roads safe by staying alert, keeping your eyes on the road, and avoiding texting while driving. We recommend using a mount to position your phone in a place where you can easily see it to help reduce dangerous distractions. It’s also important to take breaks for rest when needed to prevent drowsy driving.
- Drive Responsibly: Make sure to abide by speed limits and drive responsibly caring for yourself, riders, and all those on the road.
- Keep Your Drop-Offs Legal: Drop off passengers in safe and legal locations, like passenger loading zones or where there is enough space to pull over and avoid blocking bike lanes. It’s important to know your local laws so you can abide by them.
- Do not drop off riders in the middle of road or highways
- Malls: Always drop off passengers in designated drop-off and pick-up points
- Spread the Word to Buckle Up: It takes about three seconds to buckle yourself in your seat, and barely more time to put children in a belted car seats. A great way to start your trip is by reminding your riders to buckle up. In Dubai, seat belt use is required by law, so don’t forget to fasten yours.
- Take the High Road: Our community guidelines call for both riders and drivers to always treat each other with respect. If you encounter a difficult rider, your actions can help manage the situation. Please remain calm, avoid controversial topics of conversation, and respect people’s differences. If you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe, you can end the ride at any time. And in an emergency situation, always call 999 first. Then, when it is safe, report the incident to Uber.
- Watch for Pedestrians and Bikers: Be on the lookout for people who are walking and biking. This is especially important when you’re pulling over for a drop-off or pick-up, or driving at night. Experts report that 74 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark, and 2015 marked the highest number of pedestrian deaths in nearly a decade.
- Give Feedback: Your feedback matters! It helps improve the Uber experience and promote a safe environment. Simply rate the rider after your trip and add your comments via the “Help” button in the app. Unruly riders should be reported. Our 24/7 global support team will review your feedback and take appropriate action, which can include removing a rider’s access to Uber. Watch this video to learn more about our two-way ratings.
