How to drive with Uber in Belgium

Uber is a great way to be your own boss and make money. Here’s what you need to know if you’re driving in Belgium.

Getting started

If you are 21 or older, have a valid driving license (min 3 years in Brussels or 2 years in Flanders), continue reading to find out how to start driving with Uber.

New to driving (LVC / VVB / IBPV)

If you don’t have a LVC license or license for individually remunerated passenger transport and you want to become an independent driver, check what you need to do to start using the Uber platform.

Experienced LVC / VVB / IBPV driver

Are you an experienced driver holding a valid LVC license or license for individually remunerated passenger transport and VAT number for your business? Sign up now and start driving after completing an online training.

  • Time: 1 week
  • Cost: no additional costs if you have necessary permissions and a vehicle

Brussels Taxi driver

Are you an experienced driver holding a valid Brussels taxi licence and VAT number for your business? Sign up now.

Drive under Fleet Partner

Do you prefer to operate under a Uber Fleet Partner instead of becoming an independent operator? Get more information below.

New to driving

If you don't currently have a VAT number and a LVC license or license for individually remunerated passenger transport follow the steps below to obtain the necessary documents.

1. Sign up online to create a driver account.

Complete the onboarding training online.

2. Register your business and apply for a VAT number at the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises

Make an appointment at a business counter and obtain your business/company number.

Apply for a VAT number, at the competent business counter via a form.

Time needed: 1-3 weeks
Costs: 89.5 EUR

3. Find a vehicle that meets our requirements

Get a commercial car insurance. In order to get your license, you will need to have an insurance that covers paid transportation.

Time needed: a few weeks
Costs: dependant on the risk of the car and partner

Get a T-X license (Flanders) or T-L License (Brussels and Wallonia) plate: 35 EUR

4. Get your LVC license or license for individually remunerated passenger transport

Once you have your car, insurance and VAT number, you can ask for your LVC license or license for individually remunerated passenger transport.

Brussels: Brussels Mobility (650/year) - click here

5. Submit these documents through the Uber website or app:

  • Identity card
  • Bestuurderspas (Flanders)
  • Driver license with a medical fitness to drive certificate
  • VAT certificate
  • LVC license or license for individually remunerated passenger transport
  • Passenger transportation insurance certificate
  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Vehicle inspection certificate
  • Personal Identification documents of you and all owners of the company used to create Uber account
  • Criminal record (Brussels)

Additional documents may be required depending on your licence.

6. Account activation.

Your account will automatically be activated after completing all previous steps.

Go online.

Experienced licensed driver

If you already have a car, VAT certificate and a LVC license or license for individually remunerated passenger transport, you can complete the steps below and start driving with Uber.

1. Sign up to create a driver account.

Complete onboarding training online.

2. Submit your documents through the Uber website or app:

  • Identity card
  • Bestuurderspas (Flanders)
  • Driver license with a medical fitness to drive certificate
  • VAT certificate
  • LVC license or license for individually remunerated passenger transport
  • Passenger transportation insurance certificate
  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Vehicle inspection certificate
  • Personal Identification documents of you and all owners of the company used to create Uber account
  • Criminal record (Brussels)

3. Account activation.

Your account will automatically be activated after completing all previous steps.

4. Go online.

Driving with a taxi license

If you already have a car, VAT certificate and a Brussels taxi license, you can complete the steps below.

1. Submit your documents through the Uber website or app:

  • Identity card
  • Driver license with a medical fitness to drive certificate
  • Certificate of Competence
  • VAT certificate
  • Insurance certificate
  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Vehicle inspection certificate
  • Taxi operating license (Licence taxi)
  • Photo ID from every individual that owns 25% or more of your business

2. Account activation.

Your account will automatically be activated after completing all previous steps.

3. Go online.

Drive under Fleet Partner

Fleet Partners are business owners who, once registered as drivers with Uber, can make their fleet available to multiple drivers based on an employment contract.

If you don’t want to be self-employed but still would like to drive with Uber, you should complete the following steps:

1. Sign up to create a driver account.

Complete onboarding training online.

2. Submit these documents through the Uber website or app:

  • Identity Card
  • Bestuurderspas (Flanders)
  • Driver license with a medical fitness to drive certificate
  • Criminal record (Brussels)

3. Connect with one of our Fleet Partners to start driving.

4. Account activation.

Your account will automatically be activated after completing all previous steps.

5. Go online.

Register for VAT

It usually takes 1 to 3 weeks to complete the VAT registration process. This page walks you through the basics.
