News in the World of Uber
Mexico City Issues Ride-Share Regulations.
Reuters reports that officials in Mexico City on Wednesday published new regulations for the ride-share industry, which include a 1.5 percent tax, minimum vehicle value of no less than 200,000 pesos ($12,674), and a yearly permit costing 1,599 pesos, but do not include limits for the number of vehicles Uber can operate in the city. Uber said it welcomed regulations but is concerned that the minimum vehicle value, which it said has “no logical benefit” for the city, will drive up costs for drivers.
Uber Urges Australian Govts To Legalize Drivers.
Sydney News reports that Uber urged, in “a submission that will be sent to Victorian MPs and Transport Minister Jacinta Allan on Thursday,” will urge “the state government to license its drivers and allow them to lawfully operate on Victoria’s roads.” Uber head of policy Brad Kitschke said that “there is a way for the government to create a framework for regulating ride-sharing and they could do so immediately,” noting that Uber is “heavily self-regulated and drivers met the same standards as taxi drivers.
WA Taxis, Uber To Come Under One Licensing System In Proposed Reforms.
The ABC reports that a West Australian government green paper, which still has to “go to Cabinet for approval,” would create “one licensing regime applied to all drivers of taxis, Uber vehicles and other new technology-based services” and replace the “current metered system used by taxis” with “a model where customers are quoted a pre-agreed fare at the time of booking and payment is secured before travel.” The government intends to “continue to set minimum vehicle safety standards, including those relating to the age of a vehicle.”
