Uber Says It’s Waiting On Australian Regulator’s Approval Before Launching In Regional Areas.
Startup Smart reports that Uber said, in response to reports by Australia’s Bendigo Advertiser that the company is “advertising for drivers in Bendigo and has begun meeting with potential drivers,” that it is “waiting on a regulatory response from government” before launching, according to a company spokesperson. Uber knows that “regional communities are suffering from underemployment and unemployment” and thinks that ride-sharing could be beneficial by offering economic opportunities, according to the spokesperson.
Uber Is Testing Suggested Pickup Locations In San Francisco.
Business Insider reports that Uber is testing a Suggested Pickup Location feature in San Francisco, California, which recommends locations that riders can more easily be picked up, noting that “TechCrunch’s Josh Constine asked the company to implement the feature” earlier this week. BI speculates that Uber “probably didn’t build this feature as a direct result of Constine’s request” but could be “open to suggestions from users.”
Australia’s TWU Weighs In On Taxi Industry Review.
WA Today publishes a report by the secretary of the Transport Workers Union of NSW, that asserts that Australia’s taxi industry is still “run on 19th century rules,” with many drivers operating “under a ‘bailment’ system that was codified for the pony and traps of 1850’s London,” noting that the arrival of UberX has spurred the ACT government to initiate a review of the taxi industry.
