WA Transport Minister Holds Deal Talks With Uber.

The West Australian reports that West Australian Transport Minister Dean Nalder has discussed signing an “operating agreement” with Uber to allow the company to operate legally in the state, according to “emails Labor obtained under Freedom of Information laws” that also reveal that “Uber, its lobbying firm in WA and Mr Nalder’s staff” were in contact during “the six weeks before the launch of the company’s UberX service last October.” The West Australian adds that Nalder denied knowledge of Uber’s pending launch before Parliament Tuesday, noting that Shadow Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said it was clear “Nalder knew about UberX before its launch.”

Uber Calls On Driver Partners To Lobby Queensland, Australia Govt Ahead Of Taxi Review.

The Brisbane Times reports that Uber Australia is “marshalling the troops ahead of a review of Queensland’s taxi strategy” by calling on driver partners to “to lobby their local MP to support the service” in an email Thursday morning, noting that acting Premier Jackie Trad said Wednesday that she’s “‘adamant’ all personal door-to-door taxi services, including Uber, would be regulated.”

West Australian Liberal Says Taxi System Is A “Pyramid Scheme.”

The ABC reports reports that West Australian Liberal “backbencher” Peter Katsambanis told Parliament Wednesday that the “taxi licensing system in Australia is a pyramid scheme that disadvantages drivers and consumers” and that Uber’s entrance into the market “exposed holes in the taxi model.”
