Uber Australia Boss Challenges Queensland Govt’s Safety Priority Claims.

The Herald Sun reports that Uber’s Australia “boss” David Rohrsheim said Tuesday that the company found, “through freedom of information requests,” that “Queensland transport department staff had been ‘boasting’ to the government about spending 6000 hours on ‘enforcement activities,’” like fining the company’s driver partners, but could not be bothered to “come down to the Uber office and say what are your safety procedures,” questioning the Queensland government’s claims that “safety [is] their top priority.” The AAP notes that Rohrsheim’s comments follow attacks on Uber driver partners last week in Brisbane that prompted the government “[flag] its intention…to regulate Uber by the end of the month,” though an independent review of the taxi industry isn’t due to be completed until next August.

Uber To Offer UberPITCH During Startup Conference In Sydney, Australia.

Business Insider Australia reports that Uber will be offering its UberPITCH service “during startup conference SydStart” In Sydney, Australia on October 29 between 10am and 4pm to allow entrepreneurs “to spend 15 minutes pitching an idea to a noted entrepreneur,” the best of which “will be featured on a new web series” that will be “presented by Yellow Brick Road chairman Mark Bouris” and allow “entrants [to] win funding, mentorships and a trip to San Francisco.”

Continuing Coverage: Australia Lawmaker To Block Cab Industry’s Answer To Uber.

Next Web reports that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission issued a draft ruling Monday that indicates the lawmaker “expects it will block taxi-booking company Cabcharge from introducing an app that would rival Uber,” called iHail, because of “fear that [the app] would quickly squish the existing taxi industry.”
