Uber’s tax obligations in Australia
Uber issued the following statement in response to recent media reports about historic matters regarding Uber’s corporate structure in Australia:
Uber has always complied with its tax obligations under Australian law and is among the country’s top tax contributors.
Uber was a recipient of tax advice from PwC Australia related to our obligations under the Multinational Anti-Avoidance Law (MAAL), which came into effect in 2016. Like many other businesses at the time, we retained PwC’s services in good faith. We had no knowledge their advice may have been based on improperly obtained information.
Subsequent engagements with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) prompted us to end our relationship with PwC Australia as our tax advisor in 2016, and in 2017 we restructured the business to an onshore Australian entity. We acted swiftly and with integrity, and the ATO expressed appreciation for the actions we took at the time.
