Now that you are familiar with the system, let’s look at how to maximise your fares.

Incentives

unnamed
Incentives are payments made to Uber partners when they meet certain criteria. For example, an incentive might be offered for driving on the Uber system during certain times, such as peak hours or public holidays, or for inviting friends and family to use Uber.

When To Be Online

The great thing about the Uber system is that you can go online whenever you want. However, some times are busier than others. If you want to make more money on the Uber platform, aim to be online during the weekly peak times.

The graph below shows requests from Queensland riders. Here are the best times to be on the road:

Weekdays

  • 4am – 9am & 4pm – 7pm

Weekends

  • All weekend is busy
  • Especially Friday & Saturday after 5pm

If you haven’t received a request in a while, you are probably in a low demand area. Move closer to the city (Brisbane) or the beach (Gold Coast) to increase the requests you receive.

NOTE: if you haven’t received a request for a long time, it is possible you are have a problem with your phone or the app. Try restarting your phone or logging out of the app to fix this.

What Is Surge?

You earn even higher fares during the busiest periods with Surge.

Surge pricing is Uber’s way of managing rider demand when it is busy. When there are more requests for rides coming in than the available Uber partners can accept, prices may go up to encourage more partners to come online. We call this Surge.

Different suburbs may surge at different times and rates. The surge price is determined by the rider’s request location, not the Uber partner’s location.

How do I tell when it is surging?

When you are online on the Uber Partner app, you may notice that some areas are highlighted yellow or orange. This means that rider demand is high in these areas. Other areas may be highlighted red – this means this area is SURGING! Pickups from this area will be charged at surge prices.

The Brisbane river splits our city in half. This affects how you see surge in the Partner app. If you Go Online on the North side of the river, you will see the Northern Surge regions.

If you Go Online on the South Side of the river, you will see the Southern Surge regions.

To refresh the Surge map in the Partner app, Go Offline and Go Online a few times.

At anytime, you can use the Uber Rider App to see what surge is anywhere in Brisbane. Just move the pin around the map to check for surge.

NOTE: Regardless of whether you have refreshed the Partner app or not, your surge amount will be calculated correctly
