Thanks for an amazing debut year in the Sunshine State, Brisbane! With your help, it’s been full of exciting milestones – new product launches, on-demand ice cream, kittens and Ubercades, giving back to the local community, and thousands of new jobs for driver partners.

With this milestone, we wanted to look back at the local impact Uber has had in Brisbane, so we took a look at the data, and crunched some numbers.

What we found is that, by providing access to safe and reliable transportation options to anyone, anywhere, at anytime, Uber has helped make Brisbane a safer, more economically vibrant, and more connected place to live.

In the first year since launch, over 100,000 riders have chosen to take safe, reliable and affordable rides with Uber in Brisbane.

uberX has created flexible, well-paid jobs for over 2,000 Brisbanites, with 52% of partners in Brisbane and the Gold Coast coming from the 20 electorates with the highest unemployment.

In addition to this, over a thousand new driver partners begin driving on the Uber platform every month in Australia.

What’s better, we’ve created thousands of jobs for partners from areas of high unemployment. In fact, 52% of uberX driver partners in Brisbane and the Gold Coast come from the 20 electorates with the highest unemployment.

The typical Brisbane uberX driver partner works 20 hours a week and earns $2,500 per month, on average.

As part of the new sharing economy, ridesharing has also changed the way people earn income in Brisbane. Our driver partners are students, retirees, former taxi drivers, parents, those who are unemployed, and even those building their own businesses who want security of income as they do so. Although some drive on the Uber platform full-time, many driver partners use Uber to fill in the gaps:

“I’m a single mum with a 12 year old boy. I had a 20 year career as an Auto Electrician in the mining industry. Last year I decided it was time for a major change and I’m now studying a Bachelor of Nursing. I’m hoping to make a difference in the way dementia sufferers are treated with medication and person-centred care.

I also have a passion for umpiring netball and I’m currently training to increase my indoor netball umpiring levels so I can one day umpire at a national level.

I’m about to hit 1000 trips and I have never felt unsafe or in danger. Riders are always excited to have female drivers. It’s a great way to be earning money without long shifts and if you have children and something comes up, you just work life around it.Debra, Brisbane

We’ve safely transported over 80,000 people home from Brisbane’s streets on Friday and Saturday nights between 12am and 4am.

Uber’s also played a big role in making Brisbane’s streets safer. In our first year alone, uberX driver partners have safely transported home over 80,000 people on Friday and Saturday nights between 12am and 4am. That’s the equivalent of two Gabbas full of people taken off the city’s streets!

We get there fast too. Although 96% of taxis in Queensland arrive within 18 minutes, the average uberX in Brisbane arrives in just 3.8 mins.

So where are all these people requesting rides from? We can reveal Brisbane’s hotspots, where the most pickups occur after midnight on Friday and Saturday nights:

  • Oh Hello and The Flying Cock, Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley
  • The Family Nightclub and Alhambra Lounge, McLachlan Street, Fortitude Valley
  • Sixes & Sevens, James St, Fortitude Valley
  • Black Bird Bar & Grill and Friday’s Riverside, Eagle Street Pier, CBD
  • Regatta & Royal Exchange Hotels, Toowong

Together, Australians have travelled 20,000,000 kms on uberX in the past year.

Yep, we’ve come a long way together in the last year. In fact, Australians have travelled 20,000,000km on uberX – that’s enough rides to go to the moon and back 26 times! We can’t wait to see what lies ahead, and take uberX to even greater heights!

Happy Uberversary, Brisbane, and here’s to another awesome year!
