Our Commitment to Women's Safety
Head of Safety Australia and New Zealand
Safety is at the heart of everything we do. Every month, millions of Australians use Uber to get from A to B, and we believe everyone who uses the platform deserves to feel safe when they travel. We recognise the particular importance of addressing the safety concerns women face, and that recognition drives our continued investment in technology, policies and processes designed to help keep people safe using our platform.
Sexual violence causes serious harm. Approximately one in five women in Australia has experienced sexual violence. This is an issue that affects all parts of society, including communities across Australia and the transport sector. We’re continually raising the bar on safety, strengthening our policies, processes and technology to help prevent sexual violence and make every trip safer. This work is important to us, and you will never hear us say our work on safety is done.
When someone experiences harassment or assault using the Uber platform, how we respond matters. We have a team of dedicated safety specialists who work around the clock to respond to serious incidents and support those affected. When we receive a report of a sexual assault, our teams take immediate steps such as suspending the account of the accused party so they can’t take trips, gathering trip data (like GPS, timestamps, or in-app communication), and contacting the parties involved. Safety specialists are empowered to take swift actions, which may include deactivation. We also have a team of former law enforcement officials who work with the police to support their investigations. We work hard to respond with care and respect to each and every person who makes a report to us.
I believe the work we do can make a difference. We’ve consistently invested in our technology and brought together expertise from across our organisation to help improve safety on the platform, with a focus on preventing sexual misconduct and assault. We’ve built multiple layers of safety into the Uber experience before, during and after every trip. That starts with the strong standards we set for drivers, innovative technology and safety features, and robust reporting and response systems.
Here are some of the features we have on Uber to protect the safety of our users before, during, and after a trip in Australia:
We also work with their specialists to strengthen our safety education for drivers and riders, support a trauma-informed approach to caring for victim-survivors, and improve how our incident teams respond to reports of sexual assault. Their knowledge and frontline experience help us keep learning and improving, both in how we work to prevent harm and how we support people who have experienced it.
These tools and our longstanding partnership with WESNET are important. We will keep working to reduce risks, make it easier to report concerns, support police to hold perpetrators accountable, and better support people who experience harm. We’ll continue to listen directly to women who ride and drive with Uber, and work alongside community advocates, law enforcement, local authorities, and governments to turn action into impact.
We remain committed to making the Uber platform safer for every Australian who relies on us.
