News in the World of Uber
It’s Time for the Government to Engage with the Sharing Economy
In an article in the Brisbane Times Luke Foley, Leader of the New South Wales, Australia Labor Opposition, argues that the NSW government needs to engage with the sharing economy, which he says is “already big business,” because it can help ease capacity issues by utilising resources more efficiently. Foley notes that Uber “could dramatically ease congestion on NSW roads”.
Opinion: When Cabbies Protest, Uber Wins
In an op-ed for Venture Beat Paul Sawers argues that the “all out warfare” perpetrated by French cabbies “[played] into Uber’s hands in many ways” because “the company ends up looking like the victim,” and may lead to “a rise in sympathy for Uber” the longer the protests continue. Sawers concludes that “people like the convenience of a taxi in their pocket” and the protests may turn out to be “perhaps the best publicity a company could ask for.”
Uber Crosses Continents with UberBOAT service in Istanbul, Turkey
Bloomberg reports that Uber announced Thursday that it is launching UberBOAT in partnership with local company, Navette-Tezman Holdingin, in Istanbul, Turkey, which will allow customers to request a boat ride when “[standing] near the coastline of the city’s central waterway”. Austin Kim, Uber’s operations manager in Istanbul, said that the service “is a good addition to help solve Istanbul’s traffic problems” because it offers “transport on the Bosporus, which is obviously underutilised.”
